ipod 4G/5G Scroll Acceleration Patch survey
« on: May 03, 2007, 06:12:15 AM »
If you use a build that includes any version of the ipod Scroll Acceleration Patch (patch #5594), I (the patch author) would appreciate knowing:

1. Your ipod model (4G or 5G or 5.5G, and disk size);
2. The threshold settings you use for the three acceleration levels;
3. The font size(s) you most often use;
4. What's good or bad about the scroll acceleration.

Your feedback will influence further refinement of this patch.

Thanks.

Note: My use of rockbox tends to be limited to just playing music; I don't use fancy themes, or graphic equalizers, or playlists, or most plugins. So I may not notice when those things don't work, or if a patch of mine interferes with those things; if so, point that out to me.

1) 5.5(?)G, 30GB

2) 200, 335, 500

3) I don't know, it's the default.

4) Good: That it's THERE, which is better than none

Bad: two things - one, there is no "off" setting for a speed, meaning that it's possible to overaccelerate rather easily. two - it seems choppy, but that has a lot, I'm sure, to do with being unable to turn off "fastest" and having to deal with the unnatural acceleration when it hits 500s.

1-used to be 5G
2-the defaults
3-Big, usually 20
4-scroll accell isn't really as smooth as I'd like it, maybe I haven't used the right settings?

I never really used the patch, and now that I have a Gigabeat, I'm giving away my iPod. I must say though that this patch is a really good step towards making rockbox better than the apple OS in all aspects, not just most. It really does add a much used (needed?) feature.

Yes, it's not as smooth as it should be (nor is Apple's implementation). That's pretty much why I put this question up, as I suspect there's a relation between the thresholds and the font size (well, the number of vertical lines displayed, which is mostly a function of the font size),

However, it's smoother than I recall it (even though I wrote the patch, for the last several months I've been using an experimental version of it to which I'd introduced some bugs), so I think it may be salvageable.

Oh, evilg123, you could do me a favor, if it's not too much trouble: could you PM me the copy of button-clickwheel.c you get after applying the patch? I don't currently have access to a build environment or even to my own code.

Oh, this post explains one simple change that may make scroll accel smoother:

http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=10287.0

Note that it's not a user change, but a source code change someone would have to compile in.
