Everything else which indicates the status of the DAP (as opposed to the status of the song being played or the next song to be played) is at the top. Why an exception for the volume?

It just seems very out of place.

Trying to replace the volume is quite difficult while trying to keep things looking good. That's the only reason it was in the middle before.

This is as best as I could do with repositioning the volume:

Image removed, see later for complete version.

Now top and bottom are player status. Middle is song status. The next arrow is not the best, I know. Icons for shuffle repeat and hold will now be placed on the top dark bar.

elborak:
I do prefer this layout to the original. And I see nothing wrong with the next arrow.

And I do admit that we're now getting into the realm of very minor personal preference issues. You'll never get a 100% consensus on exactly what should be placed where. The main things are the background, font, and basic layout and those look good, at least at this resolution.

I also think it's important that the default theme have a very clean .wps file, preferably heavily commented. This will be the starting point for many folks to tweak and customize so making things as easy as possible is critical.  And with the WPS tokenizer, there's no real performance penalty to a heavily commented .wps file.

denny:
Thanks for the input elborak. I agree that the new layout is better. I've also decided to drop the text shuffle and repeat status for icons:

The .wps will contain comments on what each line/section is as well as a web address for the customwps wiki page.

perfectdrug:
it looks very good now
so only minor thing that i can think of is that the symbols for shuffle and repeat mode are a little bit too big compared to the battery or the clock symbol
a little bit tinier would be acceptable too

denny:
I might have a go at making the symbols smaller.

At the moment this is what I am going to use for the 220x176 targets. Possible with a modified background but the one used in the screens above has grown on me and its nice and simple.

I'm currently re-sizing it for the 160x128 targets and its going well. Screenshots to follow shortly. :D

I also have a question for anyone in the know. I am currently planning on using the chicago12 font at it fits better on small screens than nimbus-12. Now, its been removed from the default fonts so is it still OK to use this font? It will be included with the 160x128 WPSs.
