Just decompress the rockbox.zip you made to your player.  Same as installing a build you downloaded.

but then it says missing .rockbox folder! installation incomplete!

Exactly what did you type to build it and what did you type (and where) to unpack it?

Did you do a "make zip" after compiling?

After doing ../tools/configure and choosing your player and (N), then type make && make zip.  It will compile and create the zip.  Then just extract the zip to your player.  The zip will contain the .rockbox folder.
