AIFF Playback Help
« on: April 25, 2007, 01:33:47 AM »
Once I had my ipod plugged into my Macbook, I dragged AIFF files directly from a CD onto my ipod. The files show up under the Files portion of rockbox, but they don't play, and they don't show up under the Database. How can I play AIFF files with rockbox? Also, if I drag the files directly from a CD onto my ipod, will the files play just like they would on the CD, with all the correct gaps and whatnot between tracks? Thanks!

Do your files conform to the limitations for the Rockbox AIFF decoder (as linked to by http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SoundCodecs#Current_status) ?

Also: which build are you running (how old is it)?

There was a fix that let slightly unusual but still "conform" aiff files play - just in the night from sunday to monday.

I guess I'm not really seeing what these limitations are. As far as my build, I initially installed rockbox on monday, but then i reinstalled it on tuesday, so I should have th emost current build.

No, the most current build is from 6 or 7 hours ago.  There are several builds most days - every time the front page svn log changes for something other than a manual commit, there is a new build.

One question: Is this a data CD with AIFF files on it, or is it a Music CD, and you're compressing to AIFF but the means by which you're doing so uses a drag and drop interface to appear as if you're just copying files of the CD?

If it's the latter, which program is doing the compression?

It's an audio cd, but when my computer loads the cd and I click on it, the files inside show up as AIFF files, so I just tried to drag those directly onto my ipod, and they did transfer, but they didnt show up in my database. They did show up in my ipod when I click on it on my desktop though.

Do they have tags? The database depends on files to be properly tagged, did you actually tag your AIFF files?

No I didn't tag them, I figured they would be tagged since I was dragging the files from the CD. If I drag the fies onto my desktop first before I put them onto my ipod, how do I tag them?  I only know how to tag FLACs. I'd also be interested in learning how to tag SHNs if you know that too. And if it helps I'm using a Macbook. Thanks.

CDs don't have any incorporated tagging, some external source (a program, a user) has to tag the files encoded from one.

Unfortunately, I don't know what utilities would be most suited for you to use.

Hmmm, ok, well this time I imported a CD to intues as AIFF files, and all the files showed up as being tagged in itunes. I then transferred the files onto my ipod and for some reason they show up untagged in my database. This time however they do play.

iTunes doesn't necessarily tag files. When they show up "tagged" in iTunes, it just means that the data is in the iTunes database, and doesn't guarantee that the files themselves are tagged.
