Mpeg player on Gigabeat

I have been away from a computer for a few weeks, and I heard from a friend that there has been some improvements on the Mpeg player for the Gigabeat. Is there any validity to this statement? And if so, does anyone know any good (and by good I mean free) programs to convert AVI/.mov to Mpeg?

Get the WinFF to converter your movie files. This program can be found on the rockbox site under 'extra' then 'mpeg player'. This program is really good
