Using iPod while plugged into USB?

Well, my search didn't turn up much regarding this, and neither did my perusal of the manual. Sorry if I've missed it elsewhere, but is there a way to use the iPod while connected via USB - so that it's charging and ejected/unmounted but still available to play? Thanks in advance.

i _think_ if you hold menu while plugging in usb it should charge instead of going into usb...
