I like the left hand one. Why does a WPS need a banner saying 'now playing' when it's obviously playing and displays play/pause symbols anyway? I think it's a waste of space adding it in.

You're entitled to your preference, but take note that the bar at the top is also the progress bar.

That's a good point and I'm aware of it but I thought the screenshots I was referring to were for the Archos targets up to Ondio and the 'left-hand' one had a progress bar located lower down which I thought fitted better with the other elements on there. (looks very like the RemoteWPS I looked forward to on the cowon x5 ;)) I was asked for my opinion so I gave it!!

EDIT::

......And my other question/suggestion was related to showing remote hold. As said earlier in the thread I'd like a way to see this information here's my idea, taking the biggest graphics:

That is from top: main hold, no hold, remote hold (only) and both parts on hold. This way nothing would change for those who don't use the remote. Of course this would need adapting to smaller screens and other colour depths but I'd try, maybe it needs character on the very small screens

I just wanted to add I think those hold/remote-hold icons are great. And I don't want to sound like a naysayer, just added my tuppence worth.

Can anyone have a look at this modified version of the cabbie v2 wps for the sansa clip?
I'm talking about this wps (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/9763?getfile=18408) in FS#9763 (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/9763).

The clip has an 128x64x1 OLED display on a black background. The funny thing is that the top 16 lines are yellow, below that are two empty (black) lines and then there's the other 48 lines with cyan pixels. The original 128x64x1 cabbiev2 wps causes the artist name to be split between the yellow and the cyan part.

The modified cabbiev2 wps moves the time/remaining time indicator to the top of the screen, so it sits together with the "now playing" progress bar in the yellow part. The screenshot shows what can be done with unmodified icons (just a modified wps). Pixelma suggested on IRC that the icons could use a little modification too, moving the "highlight" on the top of the icons (e.g. play icon) from top to bottom, so it becomes more of a shadow than a highlight (activated pixels are bright on a dark background).

I think it's the most logical change, given the peculiarities of the screen.  I also think pixelma's idea is a good one.

Most of the relevant people should have already seen this, but I'll post it in this thread just to make sure no one is left out. Earlier today I sent out the following mail to contributors of cabbiev2 and other themes that are currently bundled with Rockbox. If you have contributed to cabbiev2 and did not receive such a mail, please read it and respond here with your reply:

Hello,

I'm writing because I believe you've contributed to the Rockbox theme
cabbiev2. To clear up the licensing for Rockbox themes, we would like
to ask permission to use your work under the terms of the Creative Commons
Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license
(http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/).

The reason we want to do this, is that the current licensing of themes has
become a bit of a mess, and licensing of the themes we bundle with Rockbox
is if possible even more confusing. The plan is to stop bundling any
themes but the default, and move everything to the new theme site which is
moving ever closer. To ensure a less confusing situation and maximize the
possibility to share work between themes, we want all themes on that site
to carry the same licensing terms, and have selected the Creative Commons
Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 as the most suitable.

Please reply with your response to this request, thank you for your time.

If you have time, it would be nice if you could check the following mail,
and see if there were other contributors that I've forgotten:

I'm using a version with slightly modified viewport positions and dimensions at the moment. Personally I feel it's an improvement. What do you think? Should I do this for all targets?

It looks weird to me to see the "m" in "Bathroom" cut off suddenly even though there's no visual indication that the line should be clipped shorter than the edge of the screen.

If there were some sort of visible frame or boundary that it was clipped to stay within that would be one thing, but a simple invisible line that text does not cross just seems odd to me.

Right, I get what you mean. I have the same problem with the text scrolling beyond the borders of the screen. It just looks odd to me. I do see the border of the screen as the natural boundary, but I feel that everything needs some clearance. It just appears to be neater to me.

On very small screens I'd probably let it scroll to the very edge of the screen, though. Otherwise the info viewport would get ridiculously small.

I'd recommend at the very least not changing it for any players you don't have physical access to - it's impossible to tell how it actually looks (in terms of clearance) without the actual player to judge on.

But I really think that if you want to have the text start vanishing before the screen edge, you need to introduce some sort of visual queue that it's going to happen (perhaps dimming or darkening the backdrop across the viewport area so that it's clear where text is constrained on both the left and right edges).

As well, I don't see it as the text "scrolling beyond the borders of the screen" but rather that the borders of the screen are a natural edge where it stops. For one thing, if you decrease that, lines that didn't scroll previously will start scrolling now.

Cabbie needs a fm skin for those targets that have radio! any volunteers?

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

I have some free time tomorrow and maybe this evening), so I'll try to chalk something up. :)

I should be on IRC a lot from here on through the rest of the week.
