Does acknowledge-12 have any advantage over Helv?

Yeah.

I tested it with multiple themes, and it seems to be very adaptive, though I had to adjust the WPS graphics for some themes. It fits perfectly with a good majority. It also looks much neater than the Helv font: more decent and less sparse.

Try it.  :)

Cabbie default was originally intended to use the snap font, which looks similar to acknowledge, but it turned out it didn't work with my original layout and helv was way easier to read. We would need different sizes of a font, as well.
In my opinion acknowledge shouldn't be considered for the default theme.

edit: I just realized: it looks as if we're done with cabbie 2. great work, everybody. I enjoyed this project a lot. lots of love to all of you!

I was the one who made the acknowledge font using the ttf/otf font conversion tools available somewhere on the site in the wiki, and I only made font sizes I could use with the themes I made.  If you wanted more sizes, I'd recommend getting those tools and searching for that font (I found it as part of a giant font pack, some 6,760 fonts in all).  Just be warned that the point sizes don't match the pixel height of the font (the number I have in the font name is the pixel height), so it may take some trial and error to get matching sizes to currently used fonts in many themes.  Also, the font has a _lot_ of extra space above and below the letters, which are only around 5 pixels high (for both the 10- and the 12-pixel high fonts), and would be next to impossible to read on the higher resolution displays with higher pixel density.

ZincAlloy: We're pretty much done except for the archos port. I wonder when pixelma will be finished? I think we should start discussion about which ports to add to SVN.

whoops, didn't see that it was still missing.. pixelma's work in progress screenshots look like she's nearly done, though.

The best way to talk about porting to svn would probably be in IRC or the mailing list.

FS#6568 changes the default theme to whatever we like it to be.

First all the WPS themes have to be combined into 1, and all file name collisions fixed so that they can be committed to SVN.

The current SVN themes are a good example:

http://svn.rockbox.org/viewvc.cgi/trunk/wps/iCatcher/

Though I'm not entirely sure how all this works.

Actually it was already done for a while but I didn't have much time to upload it yet (real life) - I've uploaded it today. There could be still some things to be discussed about and I hope I mentioned all "issues" in the wiki. And keep in mind that the graphics will look more narrow on the real display...  ;)

The different .wps files need names that include the resolution they were made for (e.g. cabbie2.112x64x1.wps) and then be added to the WPSLIST with definitions of the font, possibly foreground and background colour (it's quite self-explanatory if you have a look into the file).

pixelma, I don't think the first three points on your list need any discussion. what you did makes perfect sense to me.

the menu icons on the other hand deserve some discussion.

another thing that could need a little redesign is the status bar.
In my opinion it needs some rearranging. I would prefer the time centered with the rest aligned left and right - at least on large screens.
Targets with larger screens need larger icons - maybe even greyscale or color... but 2 bit is enough as long as the icons are looking nice. Ideally the status bar would use the same font as the menu and the wps...

I see that we need to do a lot of renaming...
Llorean: What else do we need to do for this to become the default theme? What would be the next steps and does this actually have the potential to become the default for many players?

I (or someone else) will commit the theme itself as soon as its ready to go into SVN (renamed, etc).  Then we can look into getting that patch setup to work with this theme as the default.  Once we're sure it works, I don't think anyone will object to committing it.

How exactly does the renaming thing work? Does every part of the theme need to have a suffix with the screen dimensions? I couldn't find out much from the source link (http://svn.rockbox.org/viewvc.cgi/trunk/wps/iCatcher/).
Still, this theme will make it into every copy of rockbox even if it's not the default one, correct?

As far as I know - all the different bitmaps (i.e. icons in different sizes/colours) need unique names so that they can still be referenced correctly when they are stored in one "cabbie2" folder. Of course the already mentioned renamed .wps files will have to use these new bitmap file names. The .cfg files will be made automatically from what someone defines in the WPSLIST file (during the build process). I'm not sure if this one is already prepared for a gradient or coloured line selector, maybe it needs some work beforehand.

I'm going to do this for the ipod video version just to see how it goes. When it's uploaded, can someone check if it's done properly?

EDIT: I added a table row thing for renaming on the wiki and *attempted* to rename the ipod video default version (not unifont yet). Can someone who knows how all this works tell me if it's ok and also can someone bug check it on a sim or the real device? I just added a "-screenize" after each file unique to the ipod video (all wps image files, wps folder, wps file, backdrop) but I didn't do it for the theme file (was I supposed to?).

Also, if the gigabeat version uses the same size icons (not sure right now), would it be allright to link up to the 320 screen size files and copy over the video wps images into the gigabeat version?
