So, what does everyone think of the font? Should I stick to helvR10? Comments please.

I still think readability is one thing and usability another. Yes, I can read the small font on the Gigabeat just fine, but I have to look closely. I can't take a quick glance at it. A slightly larger font would in my opinion look nicer, be easier on the eyes, and also allow for asian character sets.

Maybe after we get this theme finished for all ports. We can work on the normal cabbie theme. That seemed like a good candiate but the support for it died.

I've started fixing up the h10/x5 version. Here are some screendumps. Tell me what you think. One thing though is that I had to modify the unifont rwps a bit, so will it be okay to include in only that release? And does anyone know how to get a screendump of the rwps?

Nice - you could try using lazka's mix12 font (the one I used on the iPod 1G2G port which has the same screen size), as it falls midway between the two font sizes you have in your screendumps above.

Yes, but we're discussing fonts that don't support these charactersets fully anyway, so that question is irrelevant.

I was under the impression some of the fonts under discussion supports CJK. the mixed one does, sazanami does, unifont of course does.

Good question - all I know is what lazka posted:

a 12px font including (merged in this order):
 Â  - HelvR12 (??) - latin
 Â  - efont (GPL) - lots of stuff
 Â  - Wen Quan Yi (GPL) - more chin/jap
 Â  - undotum (GPL) - more korean

We need a font expert on board, or some testers who can check out the other charactersets.

The Wen Quan Yi bitmap font is a manually fine-tuned multi-strike bitmap font for on-screen display of Chinese (traditional and simplified). It has arguably the most complete coverage for Chinese characters among all known open-source fonts, including CJK Unified Ideograph (U4E00 - U9FA5) and CJK Unified Ideograph Extension A (U3400 - U4DB5) glyphs at four different sizes (9pt-12X12 pixel, 10pt-13X13 pixel, 11pt-15X15 pixel, 12pt-16x16 pixel) and two weights (medium and bold). Use this font in web pages and elsewhere eliminates the annoying "blurring" problems caused by the high stroke density of many Chinese characters and insufficient "hinting" of anti-aliased Chinese fonts. I think what I ended up doing was taking a screenshot and cropping it.  Not sure if there's an easier way.
