Here's a crude side-by-side comparison of Unifont, DejaVuSans and HelvR10 on the greyscale wps. I think that even dropping the "Next Song" text, there will be too much scrolling going on due to the limited width with Unifont.

well, we don't make the unifont versions for aesthetic reasons, so scrolling would be ok.
you're lucky - the text lines line up with spaces between the graphics nearly perfectly. Reduce the next song info to one line or drop it completely and place the playback progress line correctly and you're done.

Do we need Unicode if Lazka's work on extending Helv and/or DejaVuSans is successful?

Support-wise, it would be a lot nicer to have a single font that worked across all/many languages.

I think helv looks better on this one but that just my opinion. We need to meet a decision here.
Lazka's work is great, but it's not an alternative to unifont yet. Unifont supports a huge number of different character sets. Until lazka's fonts have reached the same status that Unifont has now we do need to have a unifont version imho.

We need to find out how the unifont versions are going to be implemented. Using the standard  theme's pictures obviously doesn't work. Is this a bug? Or some stupid mistake of mine?

I just tried to download the Gigabeat theme

What download and zip programs do you use? I would suggest to re-download the cabbie zip again.

Well it looks like my file got truncated since the file size is a bit smaller than yours.
I'll try it again from home since I seem to have a problem behind the compay firewall.

Ok... it's really difficult to make a small unifont. The only possible 11px font is the one I posted before with latin and chinese support. I could cover most languages with a too small 10pt korean font and a Non-GPL japanese one added... I definitely need to find more here.

And I don't know which CJK fonts look better since i don't know the language. Also all ttf fonts either scale well to either even oder odd heights. lots of troubles you see:P

What'll happen to to the helvR10 font size?  
This will be a problem because most ports use the 10 font size...

This one (lazka's mix12 font) works quite well with the greyscale wps. The empty line before "Next Track" has to be omitted, but nothing major is lost.

Edit:  The second screenshot is a mockup of a slightly tweaked layout, with a graphic for the NEXT heading (centred so it also works without AlbumArt), and with the icons dropped down a few pixels.
