Is there a reason we're not using iCatcher or Rockboxed as the current default theme ?

Rockboxed was deemed a bit gaudy and i think iCatcher requires patches not in svn.

Nobody could agree on one.

iCatcher was mostly suitable (I'm really the only grumpy person who really didn't like it, I think, mostly due to the strange volume meter and the fact that I felt it looks too iPod inspired to me).

Rockboxed is oh so very orange.

Llorean: couldn't we have iCatcher as default, at least until the contest brings something everyone agrees on ?

We could, but we would need to agree upon that first ;)

Why is there a huge rush to have a new default, especially if it's acknowledged we're going to be changing it again *and* people have strong objections to each of the current possible defaults?

Some people don't like rockbox right away because of the fugly default wps. This is stupid. They should do some research before doing anything to things they own and they will see that they can change it very easily. The default don't bother me because I can just load a wps to my liking.

agreed, when I first started using rockbox on my iPod, I thought it wasn't very pretty but realized in about 5 minutes that oh, you can change the theme.

Rockbox is about making your player more functional as a jukebox first, so its understandable that the default doesn't look pretty. But one can't ignore the idea that a really visually impressive default theme would really wow those iPod users ;)

There's certainly no harm in having a better default theme if it doesn't have drawbacks (as well, a default theme without peakmeters, at a bare minimum, would be nice, at least for PortalPlayer targets).

Sorry to double post but I have a question (also asked in my concept thread). I wish to use the chicago12 font. Is this ok? I cant find out why it was removed from the default fonts pack.

Thanks.

It was removed because the license doesn't allow us to redistribute it. It is not okay to use that font. Try one of the Nimbus fonts, maybe?

If you want your theme to be included in official rockbox builds, you can't use the chicago-12 font. It's been removed due to possible legal issues if I remember correctly. Besides, the chicago font had a lot less characters (mainly ASCII only, not even Latin-1 or greek and cyrillic as nimbus has).

The problem is that chicago-12 was actually a 13 pixels tall font, so there should be a nimbus-13 font to really replace it. I prepared one, but it's only the -12 version with an additional line of spacing... I also noticed that the nimbus-14 is also almost the -12 version with additional spacing (the set of characters also differs a bit) so that, if a nimbus-13 would get committed, there would actually 3 "different" fonts which only differ in spacing. Would that be desired? Thinking of it: wasn't that already the case while chicago.fnt was there...

I know it's a little off-topic (but might help the project ;)) but any comments are welcome.

I'd say your Nimbus-13 should go ahead and be committed, I don't really see a problem with it. Just my opinion though, but it'd be helpful for people migrating Chicago-12 themes easily.

pixelma, Ah, ok. Back to the drawing board then. As far as i can tell the chicago12 was as you say, a 13pt font since it had an extra line of spacing. If you have a nimbus-13 (is the extra space at the top of the font?) I would be very interested in getting a copy :). The thing about a font of this size is you get only complete lines on the 160x128 targets, no cut off and useless lines.

Thanks.
