grey screen at gigabeat startup

I was futzing with rockbox the other day, trying out some new settings and turned on "charge with usb" and "directory cache".  When I tried to start rockbox after turning it off, a grey screen came up, then the whole player froze and I had to reset the battery and start in safe mode to reset those options with the computer.  I turned them both off, then turned them on one at a time to figure out which was the culprit.  It seems directory cache prevents the gigabeat from starting.

However, now when I start rockbox, I get a grey screen for about 3 seconds, which I was getting previously.  Any idea what's causing this?  

I'd say which build I'm using, but I'm not sure how to check this--I grabbed the newest one from SVN around Tuesday afternoon.
