80 GB Functionality
« on: April 18, 2007, 07:29:11 PM »
Hi im very new to this forum so please feel free to correct me or anything..

i have a question
i was browsing rockbox's website 's patches section and came across this patch for the 80 gig 5.5G ipod what does it do?
will it possibly let me use rockbox on my 80 GB 5.5G  and if so how do i use it?

thanks so much

is it possible in any way to permanently damage your Ipod 80GB 5.5G by installing rockbox on it or using rockbox on it ?
thank you!!! :)

It can not yet mount the filesystem.

This would mean that the code in the patch can't read any of your data off the drive,
and make it usable to rockbox. What it does do is find information about the drive
size etc. I think this patch is being tested on various targets to see if the code interferes with any functionality on other targets.

If/when rockbox does get ported to the 80G iPod, you wouldn't be damaging it by installing rockbox.

While I was typing, evilg123 replied...  I'll post most of what I was going to post.  First of all, evilg is right, you cannot yet use rockbox on the 80 GB ipod.  You might want to watch the patch though and wait until it can mount the filesystem.  To use a patch, you will need to learn how to compile.  I reccomend reading the VMWare Development Platform page on the wiki ( http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/VMwareDevelopmentPlatform ), and setting up a Development platform if you're up to it.

Although, I must say that something like this is not for the computer-illiterate.  If you don't know much about computers, then perhaps someone here can compile rockbox for you, or you can just be patient and wait till the patch gets into SVN.

Contrary to what evilg says, I'm pretty sure that it is completely possible to permanently damage (see Brick) your ipod while installing rockbox if you do not do it correctly.  Read the manual and follow every step percicely.

Note: I'm still learning... please let me know if I have anything wrong here...

If all else fails you will be able to restore your iPod through itunes back to the factory settings. The memory containing the firmware that runs the emergency diskmode is not modified by a rockbox installation, so you will ALWAYS be able to restore through itunes if something goes terribly wrong.
