iPod fatally frozen after Rockbox install **SOLVED!** (see reply 13 below)

Unfortunately, the Apple still appears under these conditions. I think I must have tried every possible combination of keys and lengths of duration that's possible. This might be an example of the famed "Apple of Death" we've heard about...
*** PROBLEM Â SOLVED ***
It's only right that I show how this was resolved, given the support this topic has received.
I read in an Apple support column that one solution to the "Apple of Death" was to reset (MENU-PLAY) the iPod continuously. No luck. Finally, I discovered an Apple support article for a complee restore of my iPod. This is a 100% foolproof solutiion, albeit at the expense of having to reload all your old files from scratch:
--- Quote ---Before manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode you should verify that it has a charge, if not you need to either charge iPod before continuing or connect it to power. You can either connect it to a high-powered USB port, or plug the iPod Power Adapter into an electrical outlet and connect iPod to the power adapter.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"
If you are having difficulty putting an iPod model with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, set the iPod on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

My Mac downloaded some software, and and instructed me to upload my music and video library (from scratch) from iTunes to my iPod. Make sure your iPod battery is charged.
Maybe this post will help a few others with the same problem. - without having to discharge the battery for weeks.

Menu-Play is not the "standard reset." The check mark means that you have entered disk mode. During one of your resets, you probably hit Select-Play, which as we have been explaining is how you enter disk mode.

Exactly. I'd been moving back and forth between the two modes (Post 12) pretty easily. Both were frozen. Only when I pressed SELECT-PLAY several dozen times (Apple icon screen) that the problem was solved.
The solution from you and several other forum members was exactly right. I just had to keep doing it a few dozen times in a row until it finally worked. I still don't know why it worked that last time while the former attempts didn't. When I get the nerve to install Rockbox again, maybe I'll know more.
