Ipl bootloader
«
on:
April 11, 2006, 08:36:18 PM »
I was just wondering if there was any way to install the ipl bootloader on a 5g, without having to erase everything on the ipod. It would be a lot easier than the current way of booting back into the original firmware from rockbox. I read that it could be configured to have rockbox as one of the menu selections, but i dont know if u can add the ipl bootloader without erasing everything.
Thanks.
Heres a picture of the ipl bootloader:

Umm... since you're asking about a piece of iPL software, and not a piece of ours, I would suspect you'll have much better luck asking where the experts on it reside, which would be their site.

I mean, I know that you CAN install it without deleting your music. I just don't know *how* to do it.

You can do it, but no one knows how

Hey, just because *I* don't know how, doesn't mean nobody here does.
I would *guess* that it's almost exactly like installing the Rockbox bootloader. You need a clean bootpartition.bin (or the original one you extracted when you started your rockbox install.) And instead of our bootloader-5g.bin you need the iPodLoader2's .bin file. Then you just use it in place of our bin, and that will *probably* work.
I make no promises, as I've never done it before. But it might.
Anyway, if it doesn't, you can reuse the clean bootpartition.bin and reinstall our bootloader anyway (or if you kept rockboot.bin, just do the last step to write it to your ipod)

Sure you can do it the same way you do the rb bootloader but it wont work...yet. I have tried it. just because you installed the bootloader doesnt mean it will work. iPl bootloader looks for linux otherwise you will see white scrolling text. If you want the bootloader to work you need to install linux. If you want it to work but you dont want linux then you just rename the kernel file to kernal.bin instead of kernel.bin or dont rename it at all. That will make it work. If you do that method then you might as well finish the linux installation and have linux on there.
My iPL Bootloader shows this
iPl Bootloader 2.2
:Apple Firmware
:Apple Firmware 2 (ramming)
:iPod Linux
:Rockbox
:Reboot
:Shutdown
I use rockbox for doom and the other cool games and I dont really use linux for anything more than the games/apps. I havent gotten MPD to work on it yet.
For more information go to
http://www.ipodlinux.org/
.
To learn how to install linux go to the above website, on the left you will see the the Forums link (go there). Next click on "installation from windows". Then, if you have a 5g, click on "5g easy installation tutorial" (Hint: its a sticky).
Peace

Hmm, so with ipl you can choose which to start from. I still haven't found out how to play music on my ipod with rockbox, which makes it kind of pointless to have just games.

Playing music in Rockbox is incredibly simple. If you'd read the manual you'd probably know how: Simply click on your songs to start them...

Yah... it doesn't list them tho, I installed them using I-tunes. I read on here that you need to make mdu playlist files... I have over 5000 song's on my ipod though, so this would be incredibly hard to search through unless it organized it by artist ect.. like on the apple firmware.

And that's what TagCache is good for. See the wiki page of the same name.

Well, you CAN still use iTunes. Rockbox doesn't require it, but any music you just copy over using disk mode won't show up in the apple firmware at all. And any music you use iTunes to copy over can only be (easily) used using TagCache.

So are you saying i can keep my music like i have it on my computer and just transfer it over using disk mode? If so wow.. rockbox does everything i ever wanted on my ipod. I-tunes always freezes up when transfering massive ammounts of music. Edit * Where do i put all my music if i can just transfer it over normally.
