USB still not working on sansa clip+ after installing 3.11

Hi,

I've just updated my clip+ to version 3.11 but still cant access it via USB without going into the original firmware. I'm very new to Rockbox so I imagine I'm probably doing something wrong but after searching the net couldn't seem to find any advice besides "update to 3.11".

Before the update I would get a message telling me that the drivers had failed to install when I plugged it in. Now it tells me the drivers have been installed successfully (so something is better) but I still can't access it.

Is it a case of changing some setting I've missed? Or is there something else I need to be doing? (I'm on a Windows 7 64-bit PC and used the Rockbox Utility by the way.)

It should just work.  If it doesn't there may be some bug or incompatibility when used with your PC.  Do you have another computer you can try?

Thanks for the quick response . I'm going to my parents' tomorrow so I will try it on their Vista machine. If it still doesn't work should I try to apply the update again or would that potentially cause problems?

UPDATE: After trying it on the Vista PC I got the message that the drivers had not been successfully installed. Anyone have any ideas on how to get it working?

I encountered a similiar problem after updating yesterday, using Win7 Home Premium.
The initialization failed, just like it did on your Vista machine.

So I chose a different USB plug and I booted up the Clip+ with Rockbox before plugging in the USB cable and it got recognised and installed without a flaw.

After faffing about for a while (removing the device, reinstalling the bootloader) I've managed to get it to show up in My Computer but when I try to access it now Explorer just stops responding I am having the same problem with a memory stick though so it's probably some problem with my computer. As this isn't the right place for problems with Windows I guess that's the end of the thread (unless anyone cares to offer any quick advice on this problem!)

I am having the same problem.

Firstly if I plug the Clip+ in via USB when it is powered off it goes into the Sansa firmware, rather than the rockbox firmware.

So I tried booting up RockBox and then plugging it in.  The first time I did this, Windows (7 x64) failed to install the drivers.  The second time it installed the drivers but I could not access either the inbuilt storage or the SD card.  If I double clicked on those drives, Windows asks me to insert a disk in the drive.

The third time I tried, explorer hung.

For the going into the OF from off, use the current release of Rockbox Utility to reinstall the bootloader

It turns out that my problem was some silly Nero program that came preinstalled on my comp. It was running at startup and secretly doing things in the background so I've disabled it and can access my USB devices almost immediately now!

Very glad I've got it sorted out so now I'm free to enjoy my player even more

I cleared my cache and reinstalled the bootloader, but it still boots into the Sansa firmware when plugged in when turned off.

However, it is now working if I boot into Rockbox and then connect the USB.  I'm not sure if the new bootloader has made it start working, or if something else has changed on my computer.

I installed Rockbox version 3.11.2 on my Sansa clip +. My laptop does not recognize the clip+ anymore.

If I connect the clip+ while it's on Windows 7 says it's a malfunctioning device.

If i connect the clip+ while it's off nothing will happen at all.

Everything was fine with version 3.10 and previous versions.

I heard you can boot the clip+ into it's original firmware? How could I do that?

Edit: I found out how I can boot in the original firmware. It detects the clip+ instantly with original firmware.

That means you used an older version of rbutil. If you patch with the current one you get rockbox by default.

I am using Rock Box utility 1.2.13.  I just re-downloaded it and tried again but still have the same problem.  It always boots into the sansa firmware when plugged in from off.
Post Merge: April 24, 2012, 10:41:03 AMAha!  I didn't realize that you had to boot into the sansa firmware first for the boot loader to be upgraded.  I booted into the sansa firmware (without USB cable attached) and I got a "Firware update in progress" notice.  Now when I plug in from off, I get the RockBox firmware.

However, RockBox USB mode has stopped working again.  Neither the player or SD card is accessible.

i am basically having the same problem.  i bought a brand new Sansa Clip+ yesterday, installed the latest greatest version of Rockbox, and when I connect it to my Win7 64 Bit desktop, it doesn't work right.  It does not mount properly, it does not even eject properly, explorer hangs, etc.. Basically every symptom that has been described in this thread I have experienced.

It seems to me that there is a serious problem here that is affecting many people.  USB just seems to be very flaky on the latest firmware, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  Is anyone actually looking in to this issue?

I think it all stems from the failure to install the drivers correctly in Windows when it is plugged in for the first time.

In the end, I managed to get mine working by plugging it in to a different USB port on the computer than I used initially.  That seems to trick Windows in some way.

For anyone who is still having problems even after trying a different USB port, try holding down the home button when you plug it in.  That will boot you into the original firmware so you can transfer files.

Updating to a build with FS #12639 fixed the USB problems I was having with my Clip Zip. Perhaps try a current build?
