Things seem to be recording, but then the result is silence
« on: August 12, 2009, 02:29:39 PM »

Hi folks.

I use my iAudio X5 with rockbox very often, and like it very much.

I'm having trouble with recording though.

I used to be able to record presentations easily, getting a nice wavpack file that could be converted to ogg or whatever later.

However now when I try to record, I get a recording file of the right length, but with no sound in it.

I've tried a variety of different formats, and all seem to give the same result.

I tried both through the built in microphone, and with a little olympus microphone hooked in via the subpack on the "line in" jack.  Yes, I did change the recording source in recording settings.

I've also tried a handful of different bitrates, though far from all of them, to no avail.

I'm recording mono, not stereo.

I tried tapping the olympus microphone during a recording, expecting that should produce some sound even if the recording level was very low.  I also played back the resulting recording with the volume cranked - but all I heard was a little bit of hiss.

Is my X5 just broken?  Or am I doing something wrong?

BTW, when I try to record something, I'm pushing play, then record, then letting it record a while.  Then I push play, and pull up on the hold button 3 times to leave the recording screen.

Oh, I'm using rockbox r13968-070724.  I'm hesitant to upgrade since it used to work, but if folks feel that should fix it...

Thanks!

Your build is well over 2 years old. Upgrade upgrade upgrade! A huge amount of fixes and enhancements have been made since then.

OK, I upgraded to 3.3 for iAudio X5.

It looks prettier, and probably has more options, but my recording still seems to be messed up.

It is a little bit different now in how it records though - rather than sounding like a very faint hiss, it sounds kind of like putting your ear to a paper towel tube or seashell - with the mic or line in.

Any other suggestions?

Do the peakmeters react to noise in the recording screen?
