updating rockbox

hi.
i have an iaudio x5l with rockbox version:r16899-080331.

I'm working on mac and i was wondering how do i know if there
is a newer version of rockbox, and if so, how can i upgrade it.

That build is quite old already. If you would like to easily update your build on a Mac, try out Rockbox Utility, which simplifies the update process for you.

how can i update rockbox?

From rockbox utility just select (from the second tab) Install Rockbox and it will update for you whilst keeping your settings.

Please do not start multiple threads on the same subject.  I have merged your threads and deleted the duplicate posts.
