.Gif format viewer???
« on: March 15, 2008, 04:27:01 PM »
Would .gif format be a hassle to get into Rockbox?
It is a format that can be used to view movies!

I have removed the silly colours from your post to make it a bit easier to read.

Saying
Quote
PLEASE REPLY SOON!!!
is likely to have the opposite effect.

A gif image viewer could be added if someone wrote it.  As for gif movies, they are:

Huge
They have no sound.
They are only 8 bit, which only the greyscale targets are less than.

If you really want to write one do, but don't hold your breath for any of the devs wanting to.

If you want a starting point, it looks like fxb from iPodLinux has put together a GIF viewer.  You can find his sources here:

http://ipodlinux.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29269&highlight=gif+viewer&sid=a664c03d281d161ed1490e6d7513ecce]GIFViewer

It says that he stripped part of the GIF loading code out of the GIMP.  Maybe that can provide a starting point if you are interested.

I think Llorean is a wierd name!!!

FYI, the word Weird is an exception to the "I before E except after C" English rule.

There's a gif viewer on Flyspray:

http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/3037

Although it hasn't been updated for almost a year, and I've no idea how well it works.  But if someone wanted to continue the work...

For what reasons has the patch not been accepted yet? Is it incomplete?

Well from the comments on the task it looks like it is incomplete, yes.

I don't know why I overlooked that.  I have even checked in on its progress last year some time.

A GIF viewer would be nice for showing off short animations like this one (shown below) or this one, but noone would want it for movies (heck, Rockbox has the MPEG player for that!) or anything else.

It must be simpler just to do a gif to mpeg conversion .
Though I gif view would still be quite cool for little avatars and stuff but I can't see why you would want to use it for anything other than a short looped animation.
