Title: Clip Zip won't start
Post by: lriemann on September 30, 2018, 03:14:53 PM
I installed Rockbox on a brand new Clip Zip.
All was well.

Today i tried to transfer files to the main memory AND to the flash card at the same time.
Got an error message and now the player seems to be not functioning.

I get the following:
Panic
Mount: 0
When I unplug the device.

When I press the power button, I see the Rockbox logo for a milisecond and then the message:
plug USB cable

The message stays on screen.

When I plug the cable, windows asks if I want to format the drive.
I answer no.

If I run the Rockbox installation utility, it tells me the drive is not mountable.

Any idea how to get out of this mess?

It sounds like you corrupted something I can't say I've ever tried to transfer to internal and external at the same time before

Are you able to start into the Sansa firmware (hold volume down while power on?) and then format the internal drive through the device?

I generally wouldn't recommend letting windows format the drive but it should cause any harm if its able to do it in this case.
if the Original Firmware wouldn't start I'd start over with the sansa firmware update and do a reinstall of Rockbox from a clean slate.

Thank you.

I am not able to start the player in Sansa software.

It's always "plug usb cable"when I try to start it.

What should be my next move?

Should I try the manual firmware install from Sandisk?

"• Remove any external card from the Clip Zip before performing firmware update
• Ensure your battery is > 50% full.
• Plug in your Sansa Clip Zip to your computer.
• Extract the clpza.bin file from the .zip file you just downloaded into a folder on your computer.
• Once extracted, drag the file to the root directory of your Sansa Clip Zip
Note: If connecting in MTP mode drag and drop the Firmware file to the root of the Internal
             memory Folder
• Disconnect the Sansa Clip Zip and let the firmware update begin.
• Once it finally finishes doing its update, it will turn itself off.
• Turn the Clip Zip on, Select your language and region preference
• Once its back to the main menu, head to "Settings" >"System Settings"> "Info", and verify the "Version" is now 01.01.21"x".

The Sansa Original Firmware is pretty flaky when there is something unexpected with the drive.

the above list would be fine for your player but first you'll have to let windows format it I guess
Fat 32 512 kb/ sector try a quick format first then you should be able to start the OF and proceed to go on with the steps you listed above

I would reccomend putting the multiboot bootloader on when you install rockbox that way you can start RockBox
from the sdcard if and when something happens again

You only need the bootloader for your device
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/jmkihef72v62p/Multiboot_Bootloaders
you want the clipza one...

Thank you.

Just to make sure I understand, as i'm new to this.

1 Format internal memory.
2 Install firmware as in instructions i posted above
3 make sure the player starts with the firmware

4 Install Rockbox as I did previously? Install with multiboot loader in some way?

Oh clip zip is left while powering on to get the original firmware to boot try that first

If not ..
before you begin download some files

http://www.mediafire.com/file/h1fvgma2i748gvh/clpza_MBOOT.zip/file
unzip the file clpza_new.bin rename as clpza.bin save on your pc somewhere

http://download.rockbox.org/release/3.14/rockbox-sansaclipzip-3.14.zip

1. plug device to pc do let windows do the format choose 4096 + quick format press start

2. copy clipza.bin to root of device
3. copy .rockbox folder to the drive root

4. eject the device (Safely Remove)

5. power off device

6. hold left arrow press power button

7. wait for upgrade to complete

Do NOT Turn Off device it will power off when it is done

Thanks.

What do you mean with the first line- is it supposed to be  a link?

Oh clip zip is left while powering on to get the original firmware to boot try that first

Is the guide here relevant?

Thanks.

I held the left button and it looked like it was booting.

Then it said "FAT is corrupted..."

But I did the steps you described and it updated and now works!

Hooray!

Thank you so much.

I hope I don't need to do this again...
