Title: iPod All: iPL Loader 2.X
Post by: Llorean on March 30, 2007, 09:05:01 AM
This thread is for support questions for iPod Linux's Loader 2.

First and foremost, the most recommended solution is to visit the official Loader2 page, http://ipodlinux.org/Loader_2
Then, as you may have noticed it's at ipodlinux, you should go to their forums and seek support for it there. As the problem you are having is with their software, even if you're using it to load Rockbox, you should seek help from them first.

Loader 2 is not Rockbox software and we cannot provide support for it. While not strictly a build, iPodLinux's Loader2 can cause unexpected behaviour in Rockbox, as well as being entirely software that we do not provide. We are aware though that many Rockbox users have a desire to make use of the graphical loader.

If you are using Loader 2, before reporting a bug you should install the official Rockbox bootloader (this is as easy as running ipodpatcher and choosing to install) and verify that the bug happens there. Uninstalling the Rockbox bootloader will require that you reinstall Loader 2 manually. Ipodpatcher can be used to add Loader 2. See ipodpatcher --help, and use the function to add a binary bootloader if your loader 2 is a .bin file, and the regular add bootloader if it is a .ipod file.

Loader 2 should be able to see Rockbox if it has been extracted to the FAT32 partition of your device, and Rockbox should function so long as its .rockbox folder is found in the first primary FAT32 partition on your player.

If you need advanced help, or wish to report an actual bug with Loader 2 it should be taken to the iPL team.

As well, a Wiki page for IpodLinuxLoader2 would not be a bad thing if anyone wants to document some general "How to use it" information.

As told in the forums, i downloaded the last beta build from ipl's site (which _should_ init the coprocessor), installed it and run Rockbox from the GUI menu.
Suddenly, after rockbox began showing the version screen, my iPod just restarted.

I would gladly try the Rockbox loader, but i don't have acces to a PC with admin rights.

Now i'm running a build from the start of february, which doesn't have the root menu, but works.

How did you manage to install loader2 without admin rights?  The process should be the same for both bootloaders, requiring the same rights.

I used my fathers working computer, but he don't wont to let me use it without him sitting back me, and it's not his favourite hobby ;)

Hi jonashn,

where did you get the loader from,
i could ttry and test it out for you.

Cheers,
Ben.

Thanks, i got it from here: http://www.ipodlinux.org/images/a/a8/Ipodloader2-2.5d6.tar.gz (linked to from http://www.ipodlinux.org/Downloads).

It is the latest developement version/beta, which should have the "initialize-the-coprocessor-correct-patch".

I've attached the .conf-file i use. Just put in your iPod's root and name it "ipodloader.conf".

Hi jonashn,

i still didn't test it out but i think the first problem is that it's looking for the
rockbox.ipod file in the root - it's in the /.rockbox

just change Rockbox @ (hd0,1)"/.rockbox"/rockbox.ipod

Cheers,
Ben.

That's right, but when i used the newest rockbox, i changed that. But i'm using a build from february, when rockbox.ipod still was placed in the root.

It's my fault, of course i should have changed that when i posted the file, i just copied it from my iPod.

I just tried with the newest current build, and it worked. So no more need for help.

just move the rockbox.ipod file from inside the /.rockbox/ folder into the root and it should work
you see the ipodlinux bootloader looks for it in the root of the ipod.

Ben.

80 GB iPod with iPodLinux installed

When I try to load rockbox from my Loader2, I get the "no .rockbox directory".
My .rockbox directory is obviously there (I can see it in my iPod's root)

In my loader.cfg, I have
Rockbox @ (hd0,1)/.rockbox/rockbox.ipod

I'm sure I downloaded the 64MB version

I'm not sure what other information could be of use, but let me know, and I'll supply it. ;)

Thanks in advance

There has been reported problems about this, it seems when formatted this way Rockbox can't read it for many (all?) people. Right know Rockbox is only known to work reliably with properly formatted iPods (those formatted by iTunes in FAT32). Apparently there's something different between the two, though nobody's identified it yet.

You use Loader 2 instead of a Rockbox bootloader, not alongside one.

I've bumped the latest Loader 2 version to 2.5 (without d6 (d = development version)) long long time ago.
And it also checks for rockbox.ipod in /.rockbox.

nmradar: Check out the http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodConversionToFAT32 wiki. It explains how to fix your problem.

Just to let you know I have successfully installed Loader 2 (iPL 2.5) + iPodLinux + RockBox on a 5.5G 80G unit.
I've just followed the instructions at http://www.ipodlinux.org/5.5G but have just used the following command in order to format the FAT32 partition:

Code: [Select]
mformat -t 2428 -h 255 -s 63 -S 2048 -M 2048 -F i:

Note: for this command to work, you have to add the following line in /etc/mtools.conf

Code: [Select]
drive i: file="/dev/sdX2"
instead of the one recommended in the above link (which was mkfs.vfat -F 32 -S 2048 /dev/sdX2).

Note2: /dev/sdX is the device attached to your iPod... please use the right one (usually /dev/sda)

Hi everybody,

I have installed iPL on my 3rd gen using the Windows installer. I'm quite familiar with Rockbox (I have a Rockboxed Sansa) and I wanted to rockbox my iPod too. I read almost every bit of information available on www.ipodlinux.org and nothing helped. I read that I have to install the Loader 2.5 because of the auto-detection but it didn't work. I tried to install the new loader from "Ipodloader2-2.5.tar.gz" with the iPod Application Manager and nothing happened. I still get the Loader 2.4 screen and the error that Rockbox.ipod cannot be found. How can I install Loader 2.5? ???

I know that this is not the right place to ask but people over at iPL seem to be very selfish and they don't use their IRC channel.

Thanks

First of all nobody is obliged to help you. And iPL's IRC Channel is always a lot more quiet than the RockBox one. So your conclusion that we are selfish is offending.

If you meant by windows installer "Installer 2" you can easily upgrade to Loader 2.5.
Download ipodpatcher with Loader 2.5 embedded (http://web.inf.tu-dresden.de/~s5242253/iPL/Loader/ipodpatcher/) for your system. Then doubleclick it and enter "i" if it asks you if you want to install.

Thank you very much for your help Papst.
Sorry if it sounded offending but I really don't understand why people over at iPL don't provide the requiered information. Their wiki isn't the most comprehensive and seems to be only for devs. If an OpenSource project is started, I think that all information for an end-user should be there. Simply look at the Rockbox project: If you have a problem with Rockbox, you just have to read the Manual and all your questions will be answered. If that doesn't help, you have to read the wiki and then all questions are answered. I think other OpenSource projects should take Rockbox as an example for helping people.

On the other hand, iPL devs made a huge job, and I'm very thankful for that. Only the wiki is a bit difficult to understand and some info lacks.

EDIT: I downloaded the file and it worked. If you have such an easy solution, why don't you post it on www.ipodlinux.org ???

The reason is that a lot of people are working at the documentation for rockbox but i am more or less the only one who works at the documentation over at iPL.... and that are a LOT of pages to maintain. I know that i have to rework huge parts of the Loader 2 page and a lot of other pages too. But i have a real life too. And now that the server is more or less dead i can't update the documentation.

I always tell people who say that our (iPLs) documentation is hard to understand that they should register to the wiki and start contibuting to the wiki theirselfs so that it will be more understandable (but most people think that contributing with documentation means writing bad foum tutorials -.-).

But since this is OT i better stop complaining here ;-)

I would like to understand better where the number 2428 comes from.
It looks like the number of cylinders in the 2nd partition of a standard 80GB iPod, which is

/dev/sda1               1           4      128394    0  Empty
/dev/sda2               5        2432    77497560    b  W95 FAT32

so 2432-4 = 2428

but in case of an other partition with linux

/dev/sda1               1           4      128394    0  Empty
/dev/sda2              21        2432    77497560    b  W95 FAT32
/dev/sda3               5          20      514080   83  Linux

shouldn't it be (in this case)

2432-20 = 2412

Am I correct or does mformat understand where the partiton ends?

Thanks

From die.net (http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/mformat.1.html):
Code: [Select]
mformat [-t cylinders] [-h heads] [-n sectors]
  [-f size] [-1] [-4] [-8]
  [-v volume_label]
  [-F] [-S sizecode] [-X]
  [-2 sectors_on_track_0] [-3]
  [-0 rate_on_track_0] [-A rate_on_other_tracks]
  [-M software_sector_size]
  [-N serial_number] [-a]
  [-C] [-H hidden_sectors] [-I fsVersion]
  [-r root_sectors] [-L fat_len]
  [-B boot_sector] [-k]
  [-m media_descriptor]
  drive:

So you're right.
-t 2428 is for 5.5Gs 80GB with an unmodified partitiontable and -t 909 is for 30GB 5.5Gs.
So you calculation sould be correct and working.

i have made sure my loader.cfg is pointing to .rockbox/rockbox.ipod

im not sure if i have the correct hard drive location "Rockbox @ (hd0,1)/.rockbox/rockbox.ipod"
i installed loader through the ipod application manager II so i am not sure if it has created a linux partition.

loader gives the error "ERR: open failed"

coodnt the code be like
rockdoom @ (hd0,1)/rockbox.ipod /.rockbox/rocks/doom.rock
?
Title: Re: iPod All: iPL Loader 2.X
Post by: Llorean on August 07, 2007, 04:20:42 PM
Because iPL works differently than Rockbox. Rockbox and iPL are not the same program, and cannot be expected to work the same way. Rockbox is designed as a firmware (single-application that serves also as the operating system) whereas iPL is an operating system from which other applications can be launched.

One thing you could do is compile custom builds of Rockbox that auto-launch a plugin at start (like autostart.rock) and change the name of the plugin to the .rock you want to launch. Then you'd have a .ipod file custom compiled for each plugin you wanted to launch. Not the least complicated method ever, but probably requires the most minimal look at Rockbox code compared to any other method.

Title: no .rockbox folder Installation incomplete
Post by: sibok on September 10, 2007, 01:54:20 PM
Hi, i have ipodlinux set up and running on an ipod 5.5 ( the 80gb with the search function), and loader2 set up and running perfectly. I can launch ipodlinux, iboy, iplay, apple os, rockbox and something more.

The fact is that i just installed rockbox and it boots up perfectly but before showing the main rockbox menu a message saying "no .rockbox folder Installation incomplete". Then the main menu appears but rockbox doesn't seem to work as it should, i can't change themes, play anything etc

I don't know why it is happening. My .rockbox folder is in the fat32 partition, the one itunes uses to store everything. My partition table is like this (note that the partitions are not in the correct order, look at the cilynder start. i followed this tut http://ipodlinux.org/5.5g):

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1               1           4      128394    0  Empty
/dev/sda2              21        2432    77497560    b  W95 FAT32
/dev/sda3               5          20      514080   83  Linux

The way i installed rockbox is that:

* Downloaded current build, r14663
* Downloaded fonts, r14660
* Unzipped both in the root of my ipod, so a .rockbox folder appears and inside the rockbox firmware structure.

Then edited Loader.cfg:

Apple OS @ ramimg
iPodlInux @ (hd0,2)/kernel.bin
Rockbox @ (hd0,1)/.rockbox/rockbox.ipod
Wikipedia @ (hd0,2)/kernel.bin /mnt/Wikipodia/wikizilla

Could someone tell me what's happening? should .rockbox be .Rockbox (capital letter) ?? Is due to the partitions structure, wrong order. Please help I don't understand what's happening cause loader2 finds rockbox and boots it up, but then rockbox says some directory is missing, strange

I hope next time on one moves other's post at least if he is not pretty sure about what is doing. Cause the problem had nothing to do with loader2. So as sayd, next time i hope my post can remain untocuh so i can get help...

Well why don't you A) say what it was so other people with this problem can fix it, and B) Quit complaining that rules were enforced. Seriously, the rules explicitly state if you need help, Loader2 is considered unsupported and questions go here.

If you ask for help with Loader2, and violate the rules by starting another thread, it will get merged with this one. Loader2 causes all sorts of problems, so if it's being used *at all* it belongs here, whether it obviously causes the problem or not. If you want help outside of here, UNINSTALL LOADER2 THEN ASK.

But since you're complaining about people not helping you, you should be perfectly willing to help other people, right? So post your solution.
Title: Re: iPod All: iPL Loader 2.X
Post by: sibok on September 18, 2007, 12:33:55 PM
That's my last reply, cause i don't want to start a discusion. first i don't asked for suppor about loader2, just exposed my problem and explained at the detail how i did things, just to get better help. But as people do here, when someone ask for a problem and then says loader2 is installed you say loader2 is the problem. Maybe would be better search for the problem before acuse loader2. And as you sayd people with this problem maybe shoudl go to ipodlinux to ask for help, there no one is going to say you goodbye.

And jus to remember loader2, ipodlinux etc were working right, what failed was rockbox, thats why i posted there.
Title: Re: iPod All: iPL Loader 2.X
Post by: Llorean on September 18, 2007, 01:54:11 PM
Rockbox DEPENDS on the bootloader to do certain things. If you are NOT using the Rockbox bootloader, you are NOT using Rockbox how it's supposed to be used: Thus, it is unsupported.

For example, if you deleted the .codec files, and replaced them with your own, even though it's still the same rockbox.ipod, you would also be unsupported. Rockbox is NOT just one file. It is a series of files, working together. You chose to remove one, and so you became unsupported.

Yes, Rockbox may have been the problem, but it wasn't ALL of Rockbox there: You had an improper installation, and thus we do not help with it.

After choosing rockbox in the ipodloader 2.4 on my ipod it starts to load as normal(the orange loadingbar with the blue background), but when the loading bar is at 100% nothing happens. what am i supposed to do? I dont know if it actually a problem with rockbox or if it is a problem with my loader.

Loader2.4 is too old to boot Rockbox properly - you need 2.5 at least.

Is it possible to have a multiboot set up that boots rockbox by default with no delay but will boot IPL if a button is held down on start-up? i want to use rockbox 90% of the time and not slow down the boot time but also play around with the emulators and apps on ipodlinux.

is there a way to go to the iPL loader screen when i got the rockbox bootloader installed?because i still want to be able to use the Iboy without having to go to the iPL loader screen every time i start the ipod(i use rockbox 97% of the time, and then it's really annoying for having to select rockbox everytime i start my ipod in the iPL loader screen) so is there a way to go to the iPL loader screen while still having rockbox starting up when i turn on my ipod?(like if you press ''>||'' when it starts up it goes to ipodlinux and ''menu'' for apple OS, so is there also such a way to go to the iPL loader screen?)

The stock Rockbox bootloader does this.  Hold down Play at boot time.

DarthCle: No.  The Rockbox bootloader will look for the Linux kernel in the FAT32 partition and load that, but it's not set up to load other bootloaders.

Actually if you took the iPL loader, and put it where you'd normally put the linux kernel binary, it *might* work, if it's in the right format.

I tried installing loader2 into my ipod, but I keep getting this error while trying to install Loader2 onto my ipod "Couldn't input file loader.bin". This, of course is after I followed the instructions on the Ipod Linux site, and I had to rename the loader2 download to "loader.bin". The only difference is that I put Loader.bin and the ipodpatcher file into the same folder (entitled Loader2) in my main drive, so in the command prompt I changed drive to C:\loader2. Is there anything missing, or did I do somthing wrong?

(P.S. Sorry for the laziness Llorean, first time posting :-\)

Does anyone have loader2 somewhere? The ipodlinux site is down and I can't find it.

edit: Nevermind, I found it here: http://files.filefront.com/Ipodloader2+25targz/;9254928;/fileinfo.html

Fidelius. I've found multiple download links similar to the link you posted above, but all of them only contain the compressed file with a "bin" folder inside, and nothing else. Does anyone know why this is?

Isn't a loader.bin in there too?

Not from the link you've posted. I'm using WinRAR to extract it and all it extracts is the "bin" folder.

I don't know what winrar does, but it's definitely wrong:
Code: [Select]
$ tar tf Ipodloader2-2.5.tar.gz
bin/
bin/getLoader2Args
loader.bin

I have an ipod nano 1st gen 4GB in black which runs ipl loader 2.5, podzilla 0 and 2 and rockbox.
It has worked well for about 4/5 months but recently rockbox has been giving me some problems.

The "browse theme files", "fonts" and "While Playing Screen" menus are inaccessable mostly and when they aren't, none of the options work. Also the database seems to be cleared every time rockbox boots.
As well as the rockbox issues when I try to connect the ipod to my computer (in Disk Mode and all OSs) It will
briefly say "Do not disconnect" and then "ok to disconnect" and not appear in my computer.
Does anyone know what could be wrong? I have no memory of dropping it and it's in a tough leather case.

UPDATE:
It decided to connect to the computer so I restored it and it is now displaying the "sad ipod" screen
