Title: Black Glass WPS
Post by: senab on May 17, 2006, 12:06:09 PM
Over the last few days I've been creating a new WPS and theme based on the new WMP 11. It uses teh Album Art patch, but I'll be making a non Album Art version soon.

*For 5G iPod*

Black Glass v1.04

If you haven't got the Album Art patch on your RB, check out my iPod experimental builds (here (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=4342.0)).

Black Glass NonAA v1.03

Both can be got from Wpsipod5g (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WpsIpod5g#Black_Glass_Album_Art_Version)

From the picture it looks very nice, about to load on to my pod!!
on my pod now looks very very nice, not to sound super thick but how do you get the album art to work?

Yup just to tell you its working great on mine, but I did have to change the font

@Corius:

Well instead of using the Daily Build on the front page, use the link I've post above. And use it exactly the same, just unzip it onto your ipod.

To get the album art to load, just download the cover for the album (from google images, etc.) resize it to 100x100 and save it as cover.bmp (I use the excellent IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/) to do this. Put the cover.bmp into the directory of the album on your iPod. It'll then automatically show when you load the album ;)

Need anymore help post here.

Nope it'll work fine afaik. ;)

Have a try...

ok let me rephrase tht
what if all your music is imported from itunes and thus is in all the wrong folders and stuff?
Title: Re: New WPS: Need Testers (+ Album Art Build)
Post by: senab on May 17, 2006, 01:34:13 PM
Ah ok, nope it won't work then. The patch looks at the folder the audio file is in, then for cover.bmp and displays it. Therefore you'd need to break the iTunes folder structure.

This theme looks great, thanks for the work on it!  I'll place it on ipod, test it and post feedback later tonight.  While everything about the theme seems to come together very well, looking at the screenshot I'd imagine there would definitely be a font more suited for it...

Just a thought!

Post by: senab on May 17, 2006, 02:23:01 PM
I know mate, I said in my first post that the font didn't quite look right. It'd look better with a fixed width font though because of the tags are positioned.

I'll sort the font & icons out in the next update.

Loaded with Sinab's pre-compiled install, works lovely!

Am looking forward to a similiar version without Album Art, however... I love the sleek look on the Black iPod, but not an album-art fan really.

Thanks for the new theme, Dude!

New update: V0.91

* New Font used - Nimbus 12
* Changed Battery & Disc Spin Icons
* Changed Layout for Tag information
* Top Title/Artist/Album are now scrollable
* Background shadow added (not in screenshot)

@Presence:
A non-Album Art version I'll probably do tomorrow. Once the Album Art is finished, that will be easy to do ;)

Does it have a feature like the green5g theme where if there is no Id3 tag, it just uses the directories the song's in? This is extremely useful and saved me a lot of time instead of tagging my thousands of songs.

If you want the old font, then just change the theme file, and adjust the WPS space indents to line up properly ;)

Senab, you have gotten me to "upgrade" to the album art patch and have totally won me over with this.

Never content with things the way they are, I changed it a bit for me personally.  I added a my own picture where the album art would normally be (so it's kind of like a default picture when there's no art) and I darkened the white area around it.  In my opinion it looks better, feel free to use it (and of course feel free to cut out my image) and feel just as free to ignore it, and whatever you do, do NOT take this as a slight, I wouldn't have bothered if I didn't otherwise LOVE the WPS.

I love this theme! I am using your compiled version with the album art patch, and most of my albums have an album art image in the folder, but it's not showing up on the wps. Is there a size requirement? Or file name requirement?
Title: Re: Black Glass WPS
Post by: senab on May 18, 2006, 08:53:57 AM
The album art has to be in 8-bit/16bit/24bit bitmaps with a maximum size of 100x100. It also has to be saved as cover.bmp in each folder.  ;)

Is your setup any different?  ;)

senab,  thanks for the great wps and build.

I have q question:
I have iTunes structured music files in iPod and those are accessed via TagCache.
To put Album Art, you wrote above, "saved as cover.bmp in each folder"
How do I do this ? iTunes directory structure is F34, F35...... and the music files exist inside those Fxx.
I do not want to rearrange the directory structure because I need to run AppleFirmware. RockBox iPod is still in beta.

Then album art won't work unless you use filename bitmaps instead.

Hi,
New Ipod user here. I can't get my album art to show up. I have cover.bmp in my folder. I used this album art when I had my iRiver so it should work right? My pic is actually 100x63, but it always showed up in my H340.

Also, does the album patch work the same way as in the iRiver (it searches for 1. cover.bmp then 2. album.bmp then 3. filename.bmp??)

Nevermind. I figured it out. I thought the daily builds had the patch, but they don't. Thanks senab for sharing your patched builds with us.
Title: Re: Black Glass WPS
Post by: pjo on May 19, 2006, 08:35:32 PM
While retaining iTunes directory structure, I tried to put bmp.
For example,
K136 III 1.mp3 is in G:\iPod_Control\Music\F24
There are other music files in this directory.
K136 III 1.bmp was created, 100x97 24 bit and was placed in the same directory.
K136 III 1 is untagged and can be found in <untagged>.
BlackGlass is launched and it plays it but no bmp is shown.

What did I wrong ?

Thanks
pjo

edit
--------------------
Is  BlackGlass good for Photo ?

edit
--------------------
When BlackGlass is launched, at the top left,
bg.bmp ! or |
pb.bmp ! or |

Does this mean bg.bmp and pb.bmp are required ?

I checked WPS directory in iPod and these two bmps are there.
Why BlackGlass dispalys errors on these ?

edit
------------------------------------
I tested the bmp with iCatcher and it works.
So BlackGlass is not compatible with hoto ?
If so is it possible for you to compile BlackGlass for Photo ?

Pjo,
Are you using senab's PATCHED build? You must use his build in order for the album art to display. just unzip his build in your root directory. That's what I did and it worked

Yes I am using the build, I think I mentioned that.
Title: Re: Black Glass WPS

Well, the only other thing it could be is the file structure that you have it in, although from how you explained it it should work.

As I stated, iCatcher WPS displays Album Art correctly.

Those bmps in BG wps are for 5G so these errors are displayed, I think.

Yes. That is what I was thinking of, but before doing that I would like to confirm that with senab taht resizing is the only required task for BlackGlass to run in Photo.

Whenever I try to install this, everything is unaligned, and all i see is black background with white text...also, it goes down lower than my screen.  Is this because I'm using an ipod color/photo?

It also does this with the rockamp themes...is there a patch i need to install?  Or do i need a video to view these themes?  If so, where can i get ipod color only themes?

Also, for this theme, where do I put the .diff patches? http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WpsIpod5g#iPod_Green5g

Nevermind...I found out that it's only for video.  However, I would suggest someone emulating that green theme (or it's blue sister) for ipod color/photo...if you have time, that is.

Right, I'll do a resize tomorrow for it to work on the 4G Photo. It may take me a bit becuase the WPS has to be changed aswell.

On the issue of rockbox builds, etc. I've had a few people email me and ask me to make a weekly build with patches, etc. See here (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=4342.0).

I like those new backgrounds, but they don't exactly work with the white text, bit hard to see, I may have a go at some new backdrops later. ;)

Also I'm going to be optimizing the WPS tomorrow, it's a bit big at the mo (400kb) and I could easily get that down to ~300kb. I think after optimizing, AAC's should play a bit better aswell ;)

[edited for clarity]
Connect your iPod to your computer and with notepad (or your favorite text editor) open the wps file (It's .rockbox\wps\Black Glass.wps iirc, or something very close to that) and find the section that has the text "Time:" and "Composer:" etc.  Take out some of the spaces, and check it again.  Take out or add more as necessary until it fits.

You just edited your first While Playing Screen!

You must be using the Album Art WPS, with the non Album Art background, just totally go over all the Black Glass files with the new ones, then reload the theme. It should work then ;)

please search the forums and the wiki.
I can't count how many times that question has been asked already. also, there already is an answer to that in the wiki too.

Thanks for the advice. Navigating these forums is touchy at first but I figured it out. In the future try not to waste a post with self righteousness, just spend that time answering the question.

Neither approach to get the text on the central in the screen worked on my 5G IPOD. Tried ammending the wps file and removing spaces and also re-saving the whole theme onto the ipod and replacing files. Still the block of text is mostly off the screen.... any ideas?

Sorry for not updating for a while, been a bit busy. Anyway, due to me ditching  the P.I.Julius patches and builds I've decided to update this one, and get it upto scratch. Here's what I've done so far:

What dya think? I'm testing it now, and seems to work quite nicely on target so I may release it tomorrow.

Not Sure if I've missed something here, but since I last installed the theme (which is the best I've seen). It appears to be glitchy, the the top left of the wps, where the artist etc is displayed, there are number like 319|430 then it tells you which artist.

Oh, just noticed you need your build for this yeh? What else does your build include? As I have a 60gb I'd need the ram patch in there, is it included? Also is the scroll patch included?

Cheers and keep it up

Yeh Senab, your new theme looks really gooooood! To tell you the truth, your theme was the one which inspired me to do mine :D, so BIG THANKS TO YOU!

One little note anyway: if you have some free time, could you make some custom icons for the battery, lock, disk and so on for your theme. I think these are the only things which don't fit as good as the rest with the theme.

Thanks again, and keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Julius

Hi senab,

There are two "new" tags in your WPS file that I don't recognize. Can you point me at an updated documentation?

The tags are:
%s%m|49|318| - What is the %m? I can't find this anywhere?

%Cl|4|57|s100|s100| - What the heck is this?

%C - What is this?

Do these have something to do with the Album art?
Title: Re: Black Glass WPS
Post by: senab on September 28, 2006, 12:05:42 PM
Code: [Select]
%s%m|49|318|

This is a scrolling margin, basically it allows me to set the borders of which the text can scroll from and to.

Code: [Select]
%Cl|4|57|s100|s100|
%C

This is the album art code, the %Cl contains the parameters (in this case x co-ord, y co-ord, max height, max width). The %C just displays the album art based on the parameters set by %Cl.

Both of these features are added by patches on the tracker, they are not in the Rockbox normal builds.

I like the theme pretty much, and I have 2 questions about it:
Is there a way to increase the font size to 14 without loosing the time display?

In order to use album art, how "stable" are the patched firmwares?

Thanks in advance

Post by: stripwax on April 07, 2007, 12:04:36 PM
I think this WPS has a bug.  All of the lines that have scrolling margins applied need to include the %m tag.  The reason I say this is that the WPS display code need not strictly redraw the lines in this order. So e.g. the WPS display code might evaluate the 'Next playing' tag (resetting the scrolling margins) and then the bitrate line (which does NOT reset the scrolling margins) will get redrawn with the wrong margins.

This is what causes the bitrate and song length display details to flicker with incorrect margins when the track is changed!

The fix is easy:  just include the %m|125|320  tag at the start of every line where required:

%s%m|125|320|%ar%?fs<%fsKB|unknown>
%m|125|320|%ar%pc [%pt]
%m|125|320|%ar%?ig<%ig|unknown>
%m|125|320|%ar%?iy<%iy|unknown>
%m|125|320|%ar%fc (%?fb<%fbkbps| >)
%m|125|320|%arB:%bl%% V:%pvdb

%s%m|155|318|%al%?It<%It|>

(Alternatively, the scrolling margins patch could be modified to automatically add these necessary tags - although I suspect it will make that patch quite messy.  I'll take a look)

Cheers I'm pretty sure you can just add an enter space between the tags and the track position in the wps file.

I dunno about you but this is most convenient for my to do it right on the player using the text editor as you can see the results right away without having to connect to comp, disconnect etc.

I would do it... please don't threaten to throw me off the board again, when i'm only trying to be nice. There's no problem porting this theme, because it's under the cc-by-sa license, right?

EDIT: OK, Thanks for the clarification. i guess i'll fix this one and create a port of my blackglass for gigabeat, so everyone can use his/her own background image in the wps.

It is ALWAYS ok to modify one for your own use.
It is ALWATS ok to discuss what needs changed.  (though what instructions can be said which haven't already been said 100 times in this board are beyond me)

Is it cool to distribute your modifications?
If it is permissively licensed, than it is.
If it isn't, then it isn't.
;)
(If it is ambiguous then it isn't.)
Simple.

Hey senab, great theme man. I've been using it for about a week. I'm not much of a "grass" guy so I wanted to replace the background while keeping the placeholders for the album art and id3 info in the middle. I was wondering if you could upload the psd for the background so we can futz around with it? Thanks in advance.

Despite all issues supposedly being fixed, this theme was abruptly "removed for copyright [infringement]" with no further detail a month ago. I thought the original had already established the look as being an  authorized derivation inspired by MS rather than copying it?
Title: Re: Black Glass WPS
Post by: Llorean on December 08, 2008, 05:17:18 PM
It used images directly from Windows Media Player. That's copyright infringement.
Title: Re: Black Glass WPS
Post by: soap on December 08, 2008, 06:41:21 PM
And to clarify:
This was established by direct conversation with the original author.

As for "abrupt":
I understand how it might appear that way - but how can I make the process appear less abrupt?

I was made aware of the likely infringement by Senab while in conversations with a second party over said second party's infringement of Senab's own license.  I do not and have never used Windows Media Player - and so had no reason to know said buttons were directly lifted from it.  It was only because this second party said "well THAT one is infringing as well" that I had to investigate the entire BlackGlass lineage.

I contacted most of the authors of BlackGlass derivatives in an attempt to learn if their artwork was "inspired by" or direct copy.  Eventually I worked my way all the way back up the chain to the original creation and received the upfront and honest answer which led to the decision to pull.

At no point was a rash decision made to pull for the sake of pulling.

EDIT:
In hindsight:  If I had to evaluate the procedure the only step I would take differently would be to not have started the initial query in #rockbox-community (everything that needed to be said was eventually said in #rockbox).

EDIT 2:

OK, thanks for the information. That thread provides a useful summary of what an author can and cannot do with source material, particularly in regard to lifting copyrighted material straight from source, and creating derivative works in photoshop or similar from those and claiming (directly or through non-attribution) it as their own work. In those terms, it is clearly wrong, but many authors appear to be unaware that what they are doing is illegal.

However, even the DMCA needs a reason in takedown notices. Does TWiki have some sort of 'discuss' area where any relevant details can be kept, or can a slighly longer summary be used in future? (eg: Removed: illegal use of copyrighted images without permission or attribution)

Edit: clearer English  and more exposition
Title: Re: Black Glass WPS
Post by: soap on December 09, 2008, 09:22:57 AM
so potential authors are fully aware of the consequences of being "inspired" by copywritten UIs.
The issue is NOT that the themes in question were "inspired by copyrighted User Interfaces."
The issue is simply that the themes in question directly lifted copyrighted graphical elements whole cloth.
Please do not confuse the very different situations.
Title: Re: Black Glass WPS
Post by: Llorean on December 09, 2008, 03:58:39 PM
However, even the DMCA needs a reason in takedown notices.

This isn't like that. The DMCA is when a copyright holder gives reason something on a site should be taken down. This is the step after where the site holders, responding to notification that they're distributing copyrighted material illegally, verify this fact and remove said material.

There's really no requirement that anyone be notified in advance or indeed receive any notification, though I agree an explicit mention of what the known violation was might help make things clearer.
Title: Re: Black Glass WPS
Post by: soap on December 09, 2008, 09:08:24 PM
However, even the DMCA needs a reason in takedown notices.
Perhaps I am misreading the intent of your words, but:
The DMCA "needs a reason" because it is the government interfering in the activities of citizens.
When it comes down to brass tacks, this is a case of a private institution acting in the manner in which it sees fit.  No "reason" is necessary.

That being said - I concur with Llorean and will strive to be more explicit in the explanation left in the wiki in the future.

EDIT:  It is not a formal rule, but in the future please do not edit a post to such a degree you remove material quoted in a reply.  That would be a perfect time to add a new post, not modify an existing one.

Even before the new site was up I do believe you would be able to upload any theme for which you have rights to redistribute.
