Title: ipod video 5.5 disables mouse and keyboard when connected via usb
Post by: 97381 on December 16, 2011, 10:44:11 PM
Hi, hoping a kind person can help me out here. When I plug in via usb, as soon as the player is detected, my usb mouse and usb keyboard become disabled and can only be recovered via forced reboot of the computer.

Only thing I have tried is to set USB HID device to "no". Makes no difference. I can't find any other potential solutions.

I should also note that I recently reformatted my hard drive (winxp) and this is the first time I have plugged the player in to it. Had no issues before reformatting. Dummy question, but isn't it recognized as a generic drive? I don't recall needing to install any kind of drivers before.

I simply need to access / explore the files on it and copy some stuff to my computer.

thanks for the help

Also to clarify: I can't install Rockbox Utility, as it requires the ipod to be connected to even install.

Am I wrong about the generic drive thing? I guess a factory ipod is not recognized as such, is it. I'm not sure as I have never used this or any ipod without Rockbox.

And by the way, this problem occurs either way, whether I boot the ipod to Rockbox or to the factory firmware.

That doesn't exactly clarify things.  Are you saying you can't install with Rockbox Utility?

If you turned off the HID mode then it should behave as a UMS device.  If turning off HID mode doesn't change the behavior then either the behavior isn't related to the iPod acting as a hybrid (MSC and HID) device.  The fact that this behavior occurs in both the original firmware and Rockbox suggests that you should look for an external explanation.  I would perhaps look for an explanation on the PC side.

Probably a bad USB driver.  I'd try updating the chipset drivers, and if that doesn't fix it, reinstalling Windows.

It's possible that the USB hub you are attaching the devices to is broken, also (yes, this includes if it's attached directly to your motherboard; those ports are still technically on a hub).
