Title: Can't install the bootloader since formatting
Post by: tigertom2003uk on May 27, 2009, 03:42:32 PM
I have a H10 5GB with the radio & it's a UMS player I think.
I had to do a full format on the player as it was playing up big time! but I now can't load Rockbox onto the player.
If I use the iRiver plus software from formatting the drive it works fine until I try to load the bootloader onto the player, as soon as I do that & unplug the player which should make Rockbox load but instead I get this: Missing system files, connect to iRiver plus to restore, as soon as I do that, connect the player to iRiver plus & let it update & then unplug the player it totally removes the bootloader off the player, plus when I use iRiver plus software & then try to use the IRiver Firmware Updater it comes up with a error message saying: ID = IRIVER H10_kor_um
It's got to be something wrong with the firmware? it can't be to do with Rockbox as I had Rockbox running fine on this player before I formatted it.
I first get the iRiver splash & UM 1. 10 comes up on the screen I don't remember seeing that before! could that be something to do with it?
My H10 is a Uk model if that helps anyone.
Regards Tom.

Are you sure it's the UMS version? What you're describing sounds exactly like what happens if you use the UMS bootloader on an MTP H10

Hi there,
I'm pretty sure it's a UMS not a MTP as I also own a H10 pure & that's a MTP device.
Put it this way, on my H10 pure I have to hold down the select button & the power button for the player to go into UMS mode, but on my H10 with the radio I don't have to do that at, all I have to do is plug it into my PC while it's on & then Windows picks it up as a removable drive.
I still think it's to do with the firmware as I have tried loading a few different firmware versions on the player & now on the iRiver splash I get EU 1. 10 not UM 1. 10
Please let me know what has gone wrong?
Regards Tom.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the H10 5 and 6 GB models can be made to work either as UMS or MTP devices based on the firmware version loaded onto it... At least, from much of my forum hopping back when I was having issues with my H10 20GB that's what I seem to recall reading...

Hi there,
I have 2.53 firmware loaded on the player, but if I change the HEX file to OF.mi4 then I get the missing files message.
Hope this helps?
Regards Tom.

You need to change the .mi4 file in the System folder to OF.mi4, then grab the appropriate bootloader file from Rockbox site (or compile your own if you're into that) and use that in place of the .mi4 you just renamed. The .hex file gets flashed to the ROM, and is the bootloader that loads the .mi4 from the hard drive.

EDIT: http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/iriver/H10.mi4 is the bootloader for UMS models, and http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/iriver/H10_5GB-MTP/H10.mi4 is for MTP models. You'll need to make sure that hidden files are set to be shown on your computer or you won't see the System folder on your iriver's drive. Rename the H10.mi4 present to OF.mi4, then copy the new H10.mi4 over into the same folder, and you'll have no problems!

Hi there,
Done your instructions & now I have Rockbox working fine on my H10 again!
Thanks for all your help & I have learn't from this.
The auto way didn't add the extra HEX file which wasn't modified, it only added the modified HEX.
Now I know why the original firmware didn't like it! but still I'm not going to use the iRiver firmware, to un user friendly!
Thanks for everything! you've made me well happy!
Regards Tom. :)
