Title: Where to extract the fonts package?
Post by: stevenkelby on August 07, 2007, 11:25:57 AM
Hi Guys, first time ipod user and I am putting your awesome rockbox on it so I don't have to put itunes on the PC and can play .flac files.

I managed to get the build and bootloader on ok thanks to the manual but I have now downloaded the fonts pack to my PC's desktop. Where do I extract the file too?

Thanks,

Steve.

Same place you extracted the rockbox.zip to - i.e. your ipod.

Specifically the root (top-level directory) of your ipod.

Thanks for the replies, do I put it in the rockbox folder or on the same level?

So option 1 = L:\.rockbox\fonts

Option 2 = \L:\fonts

I figured it with help from some guys at headfi but can I please suggest the manual should say" Download the fonts pack to your desktop, the extract all files to the rockbox file in the root of your ipod, eg. L:\.rockbox\fonts

I had trouble with the bootloader too, the manual just says download it. It doesn't say where to download it. And it turns out you don't download it at all, just Run it.

Just a suggestion to make it easier for idiots like me! I guess it is kept difficult to discourage idiots though.

We don't say this, because that's wrong.

L:\.rockbox\fonts isn't the root of the player, and it isn't where you should extract the rockbox-fonts.zip file to.

The manual includes a link to exactly where to download ipodpatcher, which is the program which installs the bootloader. The bootloader is no longer required as a seperate download and hasn't been for a very long time.

Thanks for the lack of help there. I came here tonight ready to donate $100US but had been warned what a jerk Godeater is! Rockbox works for me now so I won't be back.

From conversing with others, you guys could be rich if you were more helpful.

You could have told me where to extract the fonts file. I had to ask others who I was never going to donate to.

The link you refer to opens a dialogue giving options to run save or cancel. Neither you nor the manual give further instructions.

So long!

Rasher and GodEater told you exactly where to extract the fonts pack.  You had an accurate, complete answer within 10 minutes of posting your question.

The .zip file for the fonts package, just like the rockbox build file and any properly-constructed Rockbox theme, is structured so that if you simply use the "extract" option for your unzip program and extract to the root (top-level directory) of the player, all of the files will be extracted to the correct location.  Godeater told you that the fonts package should be extracted to the "Same place you extracted the rockbox.zip to - i.e. your ipod."  Chapter 2.2.3 of the Manual explains exactly how this works:

Quote from: Chapter 2
Note that the entire contents of the .zip file should be extracted directly to the root of your player’s drive. Do not try to create a separate directory or folder on your player for the Rockbox files! The .zip file already contains the internal directory structure that Rockbox needs.
Since you had indicated in your original post that you had followed the instructions in the manual to install the Rockbox build, it was perfectly reasonable for GodEater to believe that his post would have given you all of the information that you needed to install the fonts package to the correct location.

As a matter of fact, that is NOT what the manual says.  The manual says (http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-ipodvideo/rockbox-buildch2.html#x4-120002.2.4), "Download ipodpatcher.exe from http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher/win32/ipodpatcher.exe and run it. "

It is also incorrect to say that "you don't download" ipodpatcher.  You must download it in order to run it.  By clicking on the file, you downloaded it, even if you did not save a copy locally.

If it is not already clear by now, you should now realize that Godeater and Rasher made a good faith effort to help you.  Your response was completely uncalled for and out of line.

The link you refer to opens a dialogue giving options to run save or cancel. Neither you nor the manual give further instructions.
This is a behaviour that depends on your operating system and its configuration. Clicking a link usually invokes the browser, and we neither know how your browser works nor how it is configured. Additionally, it's not our task to help you with basic computer knowledge like how to use your browser.

Also, if you cite the manual please do it correctly.

Just came back to issue a public apology for my post, it was rude and inappropriate. My problems were due to my lack of basic understanding, not anything else.

A couple guys on headfi explained it in a way that I could understand. I am using Rockbox now and it's even better than I thought. Thanks for the effort.
