Title: Philips GoGear 16xx - Is the RB dev available yet?
Post by: MartyLK on October 30, 2009, 08:14:55 AM
The status of the RB dev for the GoGear 16xx series shows to be more complete than most of the other targets. I can't locate any manual installation files, though. Are they available?

I think the install process is the same as the YH players, except obviously using the bootloader, OF, and rockbox build compiled for the GoGear.   If you get it working you should update the wiki with install directions.

Unfortunately, OF files aren't directly available for GoGears. Unless someone has somehow extracted one for the RB install and makes it available, much like the Fuze/e200v2 players, that would stop it.

Did you check the firmware link on the wiki page?  It looks like theres firmware files on the phillips webpage:

http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hdd1620_05/

Since theres several mentions of dual boot working on the player, theres obviously some way to get the OF.  Maybe you could look into it and update the wiki once you find out?

I've been using a 1620 for about 8-9 months with Rockbox running. I'm having no problems listening to mp3, ogg and wma files, all buttons do what they're supposed to do.
The only issues I have is a poor battery life and if I shutdown with the phones (PC speakers) plugged in the 1620 restarts itself.  I cant say what the plugins are like as I don't use them on this player.

To install and to put anything onto the player it has to be connected to the PC using "service mode"  (method 1)   http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/GoGearHDD6330
Compile Rockbox for 1620/30/35
 http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SimpleGuideToCompiling
Once you get the .rockbox file compiled open it and take the FWImage.ebn file and place it in the System folder (not the "_System" folder) of your player.   ** The System folder is hidden so make sure your operating system is set to show it  **.
The FWImage.ebn file will overwrite the original firmware file meaning dual boot is not possible but Rockbox is far superior than the Philips firmware plus there is only 6GB of space.

If anyone can improve on what I said please do.

This needs to be put on the Wiki but what I've said is very brief.

Michael.

You wouldn't be willing to upload your .rockbox folder for the 1635 would you? And also the bootloader file?

Thank you for your help in this.

I am having trouble with the install. It seems the boot-up into RB is occurring because I see the RB logo but it gives a "Fine not found" error. I put the FWImage.ebn file in the System folder. I then put these:

common.o
main-pp.o
show_logo.o

into the root of the DAP and also tried putting them into the System folder. Neither worked. I put the .rockbox folder into the root of the DAP and then also the System folder. No success either way.

The current SVN build is available here:
http://build.rockbox.org/data/rockbox-hdd1630.zip

Unzip this to the root directory of your player (first, you should probably delete any existing .rockbox directory first).

Since you seem to be the only one who knows how the GoGear port actually works, would you mind putting install directions on the wiki?  Once thats done I think the GoGear could be released (unstable).

ok followed the method on the main page (unzipped the rockbox folder into the root, and put the FW file in the system after renaming) and it loads the philips splash then says connect to computer. any ideas? i have the 1630 btw.

My guess would be that since the rockbox bootloader doesn't seem to run, that the bootloader isn't in the right place.  But please don't post install questions in the development threads.

Anyway, since this port is now supported and no one has posted here in over a year, I think we can close this thread and just discuss it with all the other supported builds.
