Here we go!
Rockbox for the FiiO M3K is available on my site:
http://xvtx.ru/rockbox/download.htm (http://xvtx.ru/rockbox/download.htm)

- Based on the stock FW v1.3.0 (which has also been optimized for speed and memory usage).
- It is flashed like a regular firmware (...and rolls back also).
- Almost everything works, but minor bugs will be fixed over time.

You should install it as regular update: https://www.fiio.com/newsinfo/82055.html

Enjoy!
(and please consider a donation for me or/and rb team if You'd like it).

P.S. source code will available later, when all settle a bit.

Cool just making sure, this will be my first rockbox device so I'm brand new to this. I'll probably wait till it gets ironed out a little more, just one question though, how is the scrolling? I'm at 13000 tracks and it's torture scrolling through long lists on this thing

Rockbox does an incremental speed-up as you go through a list with the button held down

Rockbox build 50ef6fe-190905 for FiiO M3K has been released:

- Fixed clicks during track change;
- Rockbox sample rate limitation (44.1KHz) has been removed!
Now we can play files with native sample rate up to 192KHz.
(Go to Settings -> Playback settings -> Frequency and choose Automatic).

Just an update, im returning the m3k in favor of the fiio m6. this rockbox release constantly freezes my device at different menus, as well as destroying the amazing battery life. i also couldnt get it to boot back into stock fiio software while rockbox is installed. all in all its not worth the trouble, if you have a lot of music avoid the m3k, if you like a working m3k avoid the releases as of this post.

Oh, that's disappointing to hear.  I bought an M3K instead of the M6 simply because of this port.  It hasn't shipped yet, so I still have time to cancel my order.

FiiO M5 would be quite cool. Any chance of a port for the Shanling M0? It looks somewhat similar the FiiO M5 at first glance.

Here is all converted themes (in the Rockbox/Themes folder): https://mega.nz/#F!0wckiIIZ!o_-7wp3aT_ob-EoxsteNqw
To add the theme, copy it content in the .rockbox folder to SD card.
The go to bootloader -> tools and select "Update Rockbox" option.

Just installed the 1.4.3 + rockbox version from your website. Weirdly, no matter which rockbox settings I change, scrolling seems to stop after a full page or so. Shouldn't it continue scrolling and even accelerate when the scroll/nav button is held? (fixed after a reboot) And is holding the power button until the screen flashes twice the proper way to power off the device from rockbox?

BTW, thanks for the port for this device! Never thought I'd be able to rockbox this player...  PEQ and scrobbling ftw. ;D

Thanks for your work on this port! Just installed the latest update, it runs great. Maybe its just me, but it seems like the battery lasts longer now. I still have the ff/RW issue, but everything else works. Even with that, it's still much better than stock.

Another cuestion  ;)

I would like to use podcast and I am using the information from the wiki.

https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/DataBase (https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/DataBase)

I'm trying to modify the /.rockbox/tagnavi_custom.config file but I can't access the file system.

Using the tools I have tried to access with ADB but it doesn't connect and returns to the tools window.

Someone could help me.

Thank you very much.

Duceboia how is the button interface, does it work with gloves?

whats the battery life like?

I kinda like the look of the player better than the rocker

Title: Re: Fiio M3k

Bilgus: MK3 is another class paragon with rocker is day ,/ night.
They gave a silicon cover included, so the player don't slip in your hand,
I found very easy operate one handed, I don't use gloves but I think it's feasible.
Scrolling a long list with the semi touch bar is not a thing on the fly (you must look and concentrate a little,) Best 59 € I've spent in a long time.
The last firmware from Fiio is really smooth and usable, if only eq. Was a little better and playlists management (m3u)... Almost no need for rockbox.
Title: Re: Fiio M3k
Post by: Duceboia on October 23, 2019, 12:36:57 PM
Battery life is very good 20 hours with Fiio firmware, not much less with rockbox, but I've not runner benchmark only estimating.
Not much power for my Superlux 681 EVO... With Xduuo X3 the same cans really vibrate in club manner at less than 1/2 volume, M3k at 55/60 make me take out Grados or other headphones. Gold marriage with my Tin Audio T2, these iem are mid- highs oriented but with foam tips and little eq kick major a##es on M3k. The DAC function is limited but may be helpful.

i finding usb storage gadget support to be buggy. after rockbox is flashed it. booted up and then usb plugged into computer. the screen shows usb storage mode but it fails. it disconnects before it gets mounted.

Code: [Select]
[1898500.779521] usb 2-2: USB disconnect, device number 12
[1898540.333685] usb 2-2: new high-speed USB device number 13 using ehci-pci
[1898540.470601] usb 2-2: New USB device found, idVendor=2972, idProduct=0003
[1898540.470609] usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[1898540.470612] usb 2-2: Product: FiiO M3K
[1898540.470615] usb 2-2: Manufacturer: FiiO M3K
[1898540.470618] usb 2-2: SerialNumber: FiiO M3K
[1898540.479312] usb-storage 2-2:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected
[1898540.480927] scsi host30: usb-storage 2-2:1.0
[1898540.780518] usb 2-2: USB disconnect, device number 13

booting back into fiio firmware usb storage mode works. before i reflashed the newer rockbox firmware usb storage mode did not work any more in ether fiio or rockbox firmware. just didn't go into usb storage mode. i could operate and browse the filesystem. the device does not show in lsblk too btw.

i am very grateful for you porting rockbox to the m3k :D. thats why i bought it :). thanks muchly!

Hi,

I'm having issues with the WLKR16n theme. It is not showing the time played in song or the dB of the volume. It looks like it is reporting out the hexadecimals instead.

EDIT: This seems to be an issue with any custom themes.

I finally got my M3K! it took around 1.5 months after ordering it on Ali Express. Of course the first thing I did is to install Rockbox (M3K_v1.4.3_e99db03-191013). The experience is overall very good, a good upgrade, specially the screen, after using the Sandisk Clip Zip.

I run into some issues:
- When connecting it to my PC through USB nothing happens. On the Fiio OS did recognize the unit and allowed me to browse the SD card
- Turning off the device didn't always work for me many times it just turns off the screen then if you click again on power off button the screen goes on and you are in the same place so it clearly didn't restart
- I think this was commented a couple of times, there is no way to skip forward or backwards. This for music is not so relevant. I use Rockbox mostly for audiobooks so it would be really great to have this working!

And this is not really an issue but I miss having this feature that was available on the Clip Zip: going to Settings > General Settings > System > Advanced Key Key Lock I would be able to decide what keys or actions are disabled and this was extremely useful for example in long audiobooks because I would disable "Skip" and leave "Seek" enabled, which means that it would never jump to another track by mistake but it would allow me to do seek (skip forward/backwards).

In any case thanks XVortex for supporting this device, which is quite affordable, and Rockbox is already much better than the original OS.

Loving the RockBox port, though there are still some issues. Is there likely to be another update soon? Still have issues with FF/RW and operating the volume control with the screen locked.

Edit: I just found a solution to the FF/RW issue. If you go into "Playback Settings > Fast Forward / Rewind > FF/RW Accel" and change it to 'Very fast', long pressing to fastforward/rewind works.

Post by: diegopau on November 12, 2019, 02:48:34 PM
Hi again.

Here are some more comments that I hope are helpful to improve this great port:

New issues:
- I have a big file (a long audiobook) that plays perfectly on the Sansa Clip Zip with Rockbox, and also in the Fiio M3K when using Fiio firmware. It doesn't however play when using Rockbox in Fiio M3K, it doesn't do anything. Are there any logs that I can attach? where can I find them? The file properties can be seen here https://www.dropbox.com/s/rh5u0227297uf3q/SMPlayer%20-%20File%20properties%202019-11-12%2020.38.28.png?dl=0, I can share it with you @XVortex in private if that helps.
- There is a (kind of) important screen that I could see on the clip zip that I can't reach using the Fiio M3K. Its a screen that allows you to select the playback speed, i use it to slowdown a bit audiobooks. Here is how it looks https://www.dropbox.com/s/jnl5ddplhm6w0p7/IMG_20191112_203959.jpg?dl=0, in the clip zip I access it by long pressing the pause/play button, I can't find any button that takes me there in the Fiio M3K.

Suggestions
- While playing any audio file, in the "While Playing" screen, there are no actions assigned to the touchpad (scrolling up / down), I think it would be a great feature to control the volumen up/down there by swipping up/down the touchpad button. That way we don't need to use the hardware buttons to control volume as long as we are seeing that screen

Question:
- Is it possible to setup the M3K so it just starts directly to Rockbox without any countdown and just with a single click on the power button (instead of long press)? that's how the clip zip is setup by default: quick click to power button runs Rockbox, power button + volume down button runs Sansa firmware.

Hi,
Is it possible to have an option to make the volume buttons also support next/previous track?
Something like holding the button pressed or double pressing it for next/previous.
Title: Re: Fiio M3k
Post by: Bilgus on December 06, 2019, 01:14:24 PM
Sure it is possible kinda of an annoying way to do it though since you'd have to turn up and down volume one press at a time

Unfortunately I don't have any source to show you as it hasn't been added to the project (yet?) but you would edit the keymap

Hi,

Using the rockbox and Fiio M3K, I'm having some issues with audio playback. The music can be sometimes "laggy, choppy and glitchy" every few seconds. It looks like the buffer may be too low, but I don't see any option in the settings to increase the buffer size... what should I do? it can be quite annoying sometimes.

Thank you for the rockbox port! been using it.

Bug: i find that with long dj mixes of music, so files that are say 1hour. rockbox has problems fast forwarding. It doesn't work very well, quite unusable. Much better is to change skip track to skip X seconds but then you lose the option to skip the track by tapping fast forward. :|

Hope this gets fixed, will be very grateful!

Tested with long mp3 dj mixes downloaded from sound cloud. like: https://soundcloud.com/djkaseyriot/dss-oct2018

Thank you

In what way unusable?  I assume that it works the same as on my old Clip+ in that pressing and holding FF means it starts off slowly then gets faster and faster so very quick to get through a multi-hour file.

thats how it should work, as it does on my iaudio x5. but instead it moves upto a few sec then stops and get stuck and never speeds up or fast forwards anymore. like it reaches a buffer limit or something???

Hi all,

I had Rockbox installed in my M3k with firmware v1.4.3. I have two quick questions.

1. To turn off the screen, I have to hold the power button for a few seconds. Is there an option that I can turn it off immediately after I push the button?

2. After turning off the screen, most of the physical buttons (stop/play, volume up & down buttons) are locked. Can they be not locked when the screen is off?

Thank you very much!

I have a brand new Fiio M3k, purchased when my old SanDisk Clip+ (with rockbox) died.  For a few days I tried to use the stock (non-rockbox) firmware, but found it lacking.  Needless to say I was thrilled to find a rockbox port!

One problem, which has been reported by others: FF/RW doesn't work, at least not with rockbox M3k firmware 1.4.3.  Does anyone know whether reverting to one of the 1.3.0 versions will remedy this?  I did find similar reports on this forum and a suggestion to change "FW/RW Accel" to "Very Fast" in playback settings, which I did, but the problem remains.  Any other suggestions?

If it helps, Pressing/holding either FF or RW flashes the associated icon on the playback screen very rapidly, but does not change the track position at all.

Thank you so much for this port. I was so frustrated with the M3K's terrible UI that I was ready to sell it... then I saw Rockbox is here!

I'd just like to report the same FF/REW bug that others are reporting - they don't work, even after adjusting speed to Ultra Fast etc.

Regardless, I will be using this going forward - thank you so much!

I answered my own question via experimentation: Reverting to M3K_v1.3.0_eef591e-190901 fixed my FW/RW problem.  Of course this means I don't get any improvements or bug fixes that might have been included in M3K_v1.4.3_e99db03-191013.zip - but so far so good.

@fossphile have you tried the solution I suggested earlier in the forum "If you go into "Playback Settings > Fast Forward / Rewind > FF/RW Accel" and change it to 'Very fast', long pressing to fastforward/rewind works."

Tried it, it does seam to help :). Its a work around :).

The current version of the M3K firmware on the Xvortex site crashes if you try to apply Perceptual Bass Enhancement in the Sound Settings menu.

Aside from that, it looks and works great!  I might be tempted to break out the theme designer. I haven't had a color screen Rockbox player since iPod 5th gen, retired almost a decade ago.

hey vortex. thanks for your great work. although there are a few issues that makes the build not daily usable for me.

1. the default power button does not lock the screen and touch interface on short press, like stock or all smartphones do. i have to long press power button in order to lock it. which is not intuitive.

2. usb file transfer does not work. i dont know if it's my issue, but i have to latest build. i have to get a usb card reader for it in order to upgrade system or doing file managements.

3. the default theme doest not support asian characters. im a veteran rockbox user i know how to fix it very well, but you should make fixed font default.

4. fast foward and fast backward is buggy and slow and sometimes dont work.

also things that are not limited to m3k, but rockbox in general.

1. support dual section display: aka make wps in the same screen of tree menu. vortex's m3k build incorporated an element like this, but limited only artist, title, no time and other infos.

2. support dual line menu item. aka make the menu item with long names wrap into second line. but second line only, if it's too long, still rolls like single line. this way could make higher res / high dpi screens more useful without result to small fonts. which is not user friendly.

im planning making my own theme for m3k (probably other devices with 240*320 screens too). it would be a minimalistic (light grey text on black backdrop, no album art), larger font (20+ font size) with unicode support.

Hey everyone working on this,

This is amazing! Thank you so much, it seriously changed my M3K so much for the better!

One bug I noticed though, has anyone else noticed that you can't scroll up in the text entry for search?

The search is still sooooooo much better than what I had to do before with scrolling through the lists, but it is pretty much the last frustration I have with the firmware. I find I can only move down, left or right so if I want to go back up I need to scroll all the way to the bottom and then loop back around, and if I miss the letter again I have to make the loop all over again.

The version I am using is from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH5h3wSFZMo&t=1s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH5h3wSFZMo&t=1s) this YouTube tutorial. Let me know if that issues is fixed and I am just on an old version, thank you!

Thank you all for all the work you are doing!

FYI, for the brave there is now a native installation of RockBox for the M3k (https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/FiioM3K). Has anyone tried it?

The only reason it isn't officially "stable" yet is the lack of Rockbox utility support.
