I've been using an iaudio x5 with rockbox since mid-2006. Just now I noticed that the latest version of the x5 bootloader is v.4; I'm under the somewhat hazy impression that the one installed on my player is v.2.
1. Is there a way to tell with more certainty which bootloader I have? "System > Version" and "System > Rockbox Info" don't seem to know, and I didn't notice any information about this on the startup screen either.
2. I've never had any problems with the bootloader that I have; should I install the latest version or rather "never change a running system"? What's different about how the hold switch is handled in v.4?

Generally, the released bootloaders are trusted and fix minor (and sometimes major) issues. I recommend you update.

'Kay, thanks. I've installed the v4 bootloader, so now I can answer the rest of my own questions:
- The bootloader version is displayed during startup; I just wasn't paying attention. It's the second line that appears on the screen during startup (just before the battery voltage).
- The change in "hold switch" behaviour seems to affect mainly the on/off switch rather than the hold (same switch but opposite direction on the X5): v2 boots rockbox as soon as you push the slider into the on/off position; v4 briefly wakes up but immediately shuts down again (from the bootloader, before loading RB) unless you hold the switch there for half a second or so.
