Title: H320 - weird sound when recording directly to mp3 / glitches / artifacts
Post by: JBS2 on March 09, 2010, 04:23:38 PM
Hey guys,

when i´m directly recoring to mp3 (no matter which bitrate), i get a weird sound.
There are glitches at the beginning of every beat of the track.

When i´m recording to Wave, Aiff or WavePack, the sound is perfect.

I also tried to record to mp3 with the original iRiver firmware, and there are no problems at all, perfect sound.
The problem occurs in the rockbox firmware only!

Here is a sample so that you can see what i mean:

Please tell me what i can do!!!

Thanks!

Do the same artifacts occur if you record to wave and then use Rockbox's MP3 encoder to convert to MP3?

I believe it's a viewer, so you just use it via the "open with" menu.

thanks!

i recorded to wave (which sounds perfect) and then used the internal mp3encoder of rockbox to encode to mp3,
-> THE SAME CRAPPY SOUND CAME OUT !!!

What the hell is the problem?  :(  :(  :(

Seriously, calm down.

Rockbox's encoder is low quality, the problem is just either a bug in it or an aspect of the fact that it's low quality. Record to WAV or wavpack and then convert to MP3 later if you want decent sound quality, that's all

I have the same problem. I recall recording directly to mp3 with earlier versions of Rockbox without any problems so I am really sad that now it is necessary to record in wav format, especially when I haven't got much disk space on my iRiver.

It would be nice to know what is causing this and if there are any plans to fix it?

IIRC, the mp3 encoder hasn't changed in ages... when did it work for you? Can you try to find out when it stopped working properly for you?

I cannot remember the version, but it was ages ago... the visual appearance was completely different from today.

That is just the screen, not the encoder.
