Title: Songs Freeze during Playback
Post by: bloodbath on October 31, 2007, 02:52:24 PM
Just today my Sansa e260R has been acting weird.  During playback, the song will freeze/stop for no reason.  Pressing play does nothing.  I must forward or reverse to another song (which will start playing) and then return to the song I was listening to.  I thought it might be the song file at first, but when I replay the song, it does not freeze again.  Rockbox itself doesn't appear to be frozen since I can get to the menus, etc.  This problem has occured intermittently so far.

I am currently using Rockbox version r15381-071030 with the Sector theme.  I mention the theme only because I tweaked the .wps file to show some information I wanted to see (e.g. - the day of the week is now displayed).  I don't think this would have any affect, but I'd rather mention it to be safe.

I also have a micro SD card installed.  I mention this because yesterday I received an error (I forgot what it said - something about an unspecified parameter or something close to that) while playing a song off the SD card (it wasn't the first time listening to something on the card).  Nothing appeared on the Playback screen except for the error message, but I could return to the menus.  However, even shutting off the Sansa didn't remove the error (every time I tried to resume playback, I received the error).  I finally just tried picking another album and everything worked fine.  I then returned to the same album and song I was listening to, and there was no issue.  I am not sure if this is related to the new freezing issue or not.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Which codec(s) are you using?  There are currently problems with FLAC playback, and also reported issues when switching codecs (i.e. using a mixture)...

I'd doubt it's related to the SD card.

Does this still happen if you reset settings back to default?  If not, see if you can work out which setting triggers it.  It's unlikely to be WPS related, more something like repeat mode.

The best place to report bugs (assuming the latest build still shows them) is on Flyspray.

Hi, I am seeing the same problem right after I downloaded the latest build  song freeze, jump around I can also move around the menus and move within them. I am using a sansa e200 series. I reloaded an older version (r15005-071006) and the problem went away.

Can you find the most recent build that still works?  This will help to narrow down which changes to the source might lead to this behavior.  Also answer pondlife's questions regarding codec(s) used.

I am only using the mp3 codec.  I will try reverting to an earlier version of Rockbox to see if this solves my problem for the time being.  I will also try to add the bug to Flyspray.

Do you think the error I received when I was using the SD card is related to the freezing issue?

I too am having these issues with my e280. It may be a bug with the most recent build. Compared to the problem I had with the last build I can live with the occassional song freezes until the next build I suppose.

Maybe Brandon's mod will have resolved this - try a new build...?

I've been experiencing the same issue on the 10-31 build, and either the 10-29 or 10-30 build (I can't remember which) for ipod color/photos.  The song just freezes, but I can still go in and out of menus.  Resuming play did not help, but forcing a reboot of the player, then starting the playlist up again will start the track at the exact point it froze.

I had this as well with the FLAC and MP3 codecs on my Gigabeat F40.

I briefly saw on the screen (but havent seen since) CODEC ERROR: then loads of squares.... it was all rubbish anyway.

I too am seeing this behaviour on my Sansa e280.
First noticed on build r15385-071931, just updated to r15392-071101 and I am still seeing this.

It hasn't been mentioned before in this thread but it seems to lock up on the track after the unit has been powered up about 20 minutes. Having just seen it stop I noticed that the Next track info was missing in the 1-2 minutes before freeze but reappeared as the track froze. Pressing >> to move to next track in the playlist resumes playback (of the new track).

All files are vorbis Q6 - ripped with EAC and encoded with oggenc2.

I'm going to see if it freezes again after 20 mins or so now I have moved on.

Edit:
The unit froze again after moving one from the previous frozen track.
The last stable build I can find is r15370-071030, I tried r15381-071031 too and that had the same problem. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem using the e280 + MP3 files.

I have a slightly similar problem with my iPod 5g video, but not quite as severe. While I'm listening to music, playback will randomly freeze up for a few seconds, with no particular pattern in the timing. This has gone on through several builds.

one more having the same problem (using a current build from a few days ago 15385). all mp3s on my sansa e280 (not R).

after listening for a while a random song will simply stop playing around midway through or so. i can skip to the next song or i can hold down the rewind (skipping back wont work) till i get to the previous song and then skip forward from there and the 'problem' song will play through without an issue.

i'll try today's current build and see if it's all better...

I'm another Rockbox user suffering from the "playback freezing half way through the song" problem.  I began having the problem back on Tuesday or Wednesday (I update my build of Rockbox almost every day).  My player is a Sansa 280R with microSD card.  I've only been playing MP3 files from an m3u playlist.  My playback settings include resume bookmarks, track shuffle, and bass/treble adjustments.

I'm guessing that the freeze may be related to a buffering problem.

Does Rockbox dump error messages to a log file anywhere?  I would post the log file if someone could tell me where to find it.

The problem is definitely real (at least on my Sansa e280), and apparently inherent to the latest build. I don't know if a formal bug report has been made, but I assume they'll be working on trying to correct it on a future build.

If it's still a problem with r15409 or later, I'd suggest you report this on the bug tracker, rather than here.  When in the "frozen" state it might be useful to go to the Debug > Buffering Thread screen and include all the displayed values on your bug report.

Beyond that you need to build a "logf" build, which will produce a log that you can save into a file.  Let me know if you'd like me to make one for you.

happened to me today with the 15409 build. if it happens again to me today i'll try and check the debug values as pondlife suggested.

well it happened again so i went to the buffering thread, and before i could copy anything down it mysteriously began to play again (not the song it was stuck on)

Pondlife, please do create a logf build of the current build.  Many of us users are interested in helping the developers troubleshoot problems.

I updated to the latest build at 11:00 AM EDT today and the freezing problem still exists.  This time, the song froze 11 seconds into playing (0:11 / 8:56).  I noticed that the freeze happened just after the title of the next track was displayed (right after the "Next: ?" field on my Now Playing screen changed to "Next: Title_Of_Next_Track" -- i.e. the '?' character was replaced).

I had turned on replay-gain (track on shuffle, prevent clipping) for this playing session.

While the playback was frozen, I copied down the following info:

As pondlife said, someone should file a bug report to flyspray (the "bug reports" link).  This will get more attention from developers than posting to a forum topic.

I contacted Nico_P on IRC about this yesterday.  Evidently the MOB patch makes an assumption about the ATA setup that does not hold because of the odd way the Sansa's flash is organized.  As a result, the encoded audio buffer never refills and playback simply stops when it empties.

It just happened again to me.  Took a bit longer to kick in this time but still, same issue.  Stopping mid-song, skipping to next track displays (root) instead of ID3 tags, cannot skip backwards before the song which is stuck.  "Shutting down..." screen sticks and a hard shutdown (Power for 15 seconds) must be done.

Sansa e280
r15460-071104

For the record I was playing a FLAC file when this happened, which would make it related specifically to FS#8074 but I get the feeling FS#8077 is the same thing and may also need to be reopened.

Looks like it's been deaded.  Send some love to lostlogic.

I'm getting this problem when playing songs with revision r15468-071105 on my iRiver H120

I first tried playing an ogg and the playback froze after 1 second. I reset it with a pin and tried again with the same result (with the same ogg file). I then tried an MP3 and that worked OK. A bit later on I tried a different ogg file and that played from start to finish without a problem.

The original ogg still freezes after 1 or 2 seconds but I can just hold stop to shutdown Rockbox.

Edit

Just tried with another ogg file and it stopped playing less than a second in, so I had to reset it.

Yep, exact same problem, and I was simply playing mp3s. Same issue, takes longer to freeze than previous build, and need to do long button press in order to shutdown and reboot.

Anyone else been experiencing freezing in other areas?  For example, my Sansa e280 is suddenly freezing when I try to Browse Themes.  I never once had that issue before.

I updated to r15460-071104 yesterday.

Today I played over 100 MP3s flawlessly from three different playlists for just under 8 hours straight.  However, at the 8 hour mark, playback froze 51 seconds into a 3 min 26 sec song.

I also noticed when after my first playlist of the day completed, I selected "Resume Playback", and instead of displaying "Nothing to Resume", it instead played back the last three seconds of the last song from the playlist.

The main difference for me was the relocating of the Menu button from the Power/Menu button to the Down button.  I actually didn't get to play around with it too much because of the freezing issue.  For now I'm going to stay with an earlier build.  I like build r15236-071021 because that was the first one to address disabling the database rebuilding when connecting with USB.

If I'm not mistaken that was something done by the bootloader update, not Rockbox itself.

It was the bootloader update that did it, and that wasn't the beginning of disabling database rebuilding, that was simply an update to improve that feature (fix some problems with it, and add a newer firmware version that was supported).
Title: Re: Songs Freeze during Playback
Post by: ONE_HUMAN on November 06, 2007, 11:09:50 PM
Yes, I'm referring to this:

20 Oct 17:08
Barry Wardell

bootloader/main-pp.c [diff]
rbutil/sansapatcher/sansapatcher.c [diff]

Support database rebuild disabling when USB is connected for all e200 OF versions. Some people may have to update the OF (to any version they want) using sansapatcher before it will work. This just ensures that the NVPARAMS are in a good state and we can be sure where to look for the rebuild flag. The c200 OF doesn't reboot before rebuilding the database, so our trick won't ever work there.

A day or so after that a newer version of sansapatcher was available... I believe it was the 0.5 update at the time.  Or maybe even 0.6, because as I recall it came out right after.  I don't really remember.  Not important.

It is fairly important, as only the correct version will work as you expect.

The point is that you don't need to stick with an old build for this feature, as it is in the bootloader not a build.

Things are likely to remain a little unsettled in the area of playback for a good week or two whilst MoB settles down into the codebase. It is being worked on, rest assured.

Well duh.  I meant it wasn't important when I made that post to remember the exact version of the bootloader.  If memory serves me, 0.5 was the first version which disabled the database rebuild, and therefore this would have also been coded into 0.6.  However, perhaps it was version 0.6.  It doesn't really matter to me now as I'm obviously going to use the most recent version that I have, which in this case is 0.6.

No, I just have to stick with an older build to avoid the keymap changes.

Are we done now?

Can everybody else who posts here do me (and many others) a favor.  If you're talking about the playback freeze problem, please speak up by all means.  If you're talking about ANYTHING else please post elsewhere.  I'm sure I'm not the only one watching this thread for news regarding this issue.  I don't care if you hate the new keymap.  I don't care if you love the new keymap.  I don't care if your keypad is broken.  I'll be happy to read whatever your write - just post it in another thread (like perhaps the several going around regarding the keymap change).

Thanks.  And I'm not assigning blame either way here - the initial question that started the topic drift was probably honest enough, but lets take the discussion elsewhere...

I'll acknowledge rich0's wishes by stating that I'm also getting odd playback issues on my iPod video.

I tried selecting a FLAC file for playback from an album, but instead the next song in the folder starts playing. When I go back to the file menu (hitting SELECT from the WPS), selecting the proper song causes Rockbox to freeze up, forcing me to hard reset (MENU + SELECT). This happens if the first song in question is still playing.

And it's not just FLAC files that cause this. I'm also getting this behavior from Vorbis files. The FLAC files I tried were FLAC-8, while the Vorbis files are Q5 VBR; I encoded them using CDex 1.71 beta 2.

This started happening with r15493, but I'm going to update to a current build later on and test again.

The latest build seems to have fixed this for me!

I am using r15635 and I seem to be having all sort of freezing issues in my Sansa e280. Some times I can get it to play a song sometimes it freezes before playing somtimes it works for 10 minutes ... regardless it freezes freely now.

I wasn't having any problems till about three weeks ago when I upgraded to a newer version of rockbox. I am gonna see if I can switch to an older build.

I was having terrible freezing problems with my e-280 until I reformatted and reloaded the memory.  I used "sansa.fmt" as discussed elsewhere.  Now I have no more problems.

I update to the daily build almost every day, before and after I reformatted, and the reformat seemed to do the trick for me.
