Title: Choice of Linux Distro for developing with
Post by: GodEater on March 02, 2007, 09:16:51 AM
I'm curious to know which distro people choose to run when they develop for Rockbox (assuming they use one, and don't use cygwin, vmware, or coLinux).

If you vote, I'd appreciate a quick one liner on why, if you have time :)

I use mandrake linux because it is my first one and the websites said that it was easy to use!

I chose kubuntu because for several reasons (including rockbox developement), i wanted linux with KDE. ubuntu was almost unanimously presented as the best distro of the moment so i went with kubuntu and now it's my main OS :)

I use Gentoo, because I'm used to it.

I use Ubuntu, because I wanted to switch from windows to linux anyway and ubuntu has a very nice packaging mechanism (but I don't know other Distros, it might not be the best).
You can also find very much information in the internet about ubuntu. A friend has Ubuntu, so this biased my decision, too.

If I want to try out KDE then I can install it in ubuntu, too, so  this was not part of the decision for me.

I suppose that the rockboxdev.sh script and a good editor will run on every (major) distro in  the same way, so it only matters if you want to use Linux for more than just programming.

I use Gentoo, because I'm used to it.

How come there's only one vote for it then (which was mine!) ?

I'm actually on Kubuntu but I'm thinking about moving back to Gentoo.

Just a curious question that's not meant to criticize this thread: Are there any major differences between GNU/Linux distros when it comes to software development? I thought it was pretty much all the same, as long as it has the GNU toolchain and other vital tools. Basically what Rincewind said.

Pretty much. I'm just more comfortable in Gentoo for whatever reason. Lol.

After trying several distributions a couple of years ago I stopped at RedHat Linux, now using Fedora. I'm currently looking a bit into Gentoo, might switch at some point (and if I find enough time, which might occur never ...)

I've had a couple of problems with Ubuntu Edgy, so when Fawn comes out I'm going to do a clean install.

Used to have Gentoo, switched to Debian when I noticed that compiling world takes too much time.
Both run under colinux (http://www.colinux.org).
