Title: Can't extract files to iriver
Post by: Konig Drache on March 12, 2007, 10:53:06 AM
Ok, I downloaded what I needed for my iriver 20 gb player.
Then I went to extract all, then browse but it wasn't on there!
It just had my computer, with all the files and stuff, the cd drive, and that's it.

So...is there something special I have to do to make it show up?

I've read your post about 5 times and I have absolutely no idea what you are asking.  Could you please explain in more detail?

Some of the information that would help us help you:

What exactly did you download?
What program did you use to extract the contents of the download?
Where did you extract the contents to?

Not sure what you're exactly talking about or what player, but could it be that you don't have "show files" in the player's quick screen set to "all"?

Or are you saying that your player isn't showing up on your computer, when you connect the player to the computer?  If that's the case, try restarting your computer and then connect your player to the computer again--sometimes, there are these "hiccups."

I'm not sure if I understood this strange question right, but my assumtion is he searches for the root folder of his player ... please read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_directory

I downloaded the rockbox thing, the zip file, what else?

And, like your manual says, I right click it, extract all...then you browse where you want to extract the files.
Your supposed to extract them to your media player(h10) but it doesn't appear when I browse.
Is that better?

I even went My computer/Iriver 20GC or whatever it was, and it says it doesn't exist.
I have it plugged in and everything, it appears on My computer, but when I browse to extract all the files to it, it doesn't show up on My computer then.

You will need to use the UMS trick as described here in the maunal. http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-h10/rockbox-buildch2.html#x4-110002.2.3
As you can see that is in the section "Installing the Bootloader" which is one of the steps that you need to go throug to get rockbox to work, please read the entire installing chapter in the manual.

It clearly says
Quote from: Rockbox manual
The H10 20GB is only available as a MTP device, but can be forced into UMS mode using the UMS trick.

We have a number different downloads, including the fonts package, various themes, and the firmware itself.  These different downloads have different folder structures and will extract to different places on your player.  So my question was a relevant one.

Konig : I'll repeat the above advice.  Please read all of the steps in the installation guide!  From your other post, it sounds to me like you have not installed the bootloader, which is the very next step!

Isn't that how it's supposed to look?
Tell me if I'm wrong.

You haven't followed all of the instructions.  From the link that stripwax posted:

4. Copy the H10_20GC.mi4 file you downloaded to the System directory on your player.

Konig - for avoidance of confusion, the "System" directory is the directory called "System".  In your example I imagine this would be E:\System   but you showed us the contents of E:\

The System directory is a hidden directory. You can either set your computer to show hidden files or type "E:\System" into the address bar to get to it.

Thanx a bunch!
I typed the system after the E: and then I took it off so I could do the UMS trick because I forgot to, and now it works!!!

Odd how I just had to type system, and then it appeared there and now it's working...thanx guys.

Btw, does it only play MP3 files?
What my bro said...

Dude...   the installation instructions that we pointed you to earlier explicitly say exactly that the System folder is a 'hidden' folder and you need to make the hidden folders visible before you see them ..     I thought you'd said you'd read the instructions, but all the problems you had were because you missed parts of those instructions out.

If the instructions are not clear, could you pls let us know how to make them clearer?  This will help other users in the future.

As for whether rockbox can only play mp3s ..    short answer is no, it can play other things too, but read the manual.  I'm not going to tell you which formats rockbox can play because it's all in the manual.  Every question you probably have about rockbox is already answered in the rockbox manual.   Hopefully that's clear now  :D
