Title: Ipod 2G (20GB) Installation of ipodpatcher failed. Firewire?
Post by: etien on August 16, 2007, 07:56:06 PM
Hi there

As there isn't a specific thread yet for Ipod 2G, I thought Hardware was the most likely issue (or rather, the second most likely after end-useritis).

Following a successful install of RB to an Ipod Photo, I have convinced my bro to give it a try on his trusty old 2G. Now these, to the best of my knowledge only ever came in Firewire flavour.

I've restored the software to Windows/FAT32 with the Macbook Pro running Windows, unzipped the build to root, but although the computer sees the ipod fine, after unmounting the drive (not ejecting) and launching ipodpatcher I get an error message:

[INFO] Scanning disk devices...
[ERR]  No ipods found, aborting
[ERR]  Please connect your ipod and ensure it is in disk mode
[ERR]  Also ensure that itunes is closed, and that your ipod is not mounted.
[ERR]  Please refer to the Rockbox manual if you continue to have problems.

I have tried resetting and starting in disk mode, same message.

As Firewire To USB Adapters don't exist, I was curious as to how the devs had managed to get this to work!

Thanks a lot

You could have posted this to the Apple Installation/Removal topic, since you are asking an installation question.

That is a stumper, though. I was always wondering this, myself.

I'm pretty sure the ipodpatcher binary hasn't been updated yet -- i.e. if you want to install the bootloader you need to build ipodpatcher from svn yourself.

That's exactly the problem - there is no official bootloader released for the 2G yet, and the current release version of ipodpatcher won't recognise the 2G either.

You'll need to either wait until the 2G port is officially available, or build ipodpatcher and the bootloader yourself from SVN.

I was afraid I was gonna get this answer  ;D

My knowledge in code stops at a few VBA macros for Excel, so I'm going to have to let the big guns get on with it and be patient!

Let it be known I've got a 2G ready to welcome and test Rockbox when there's a bootloader on the go.

Cheers all

ps I didn't want to post in this section as the subtext specified which models should be discussed, and the 2G wasn't one of them. I thought you could argue that Firewire being the problem, and Firewire being both a hardware and software format, my question had its place in Hardware... Thanks for moving the topic  ;)

That answered my question too .. another 2G user who was trying to instal rockbox for the first time. I ran the Apple iPod Updater but still no recognition. Specifically, I get the following (note the parameter 1 - if this is omited the message is more vague):

I've got the same problem with the 1G ipod.  I was able to unzip the file onto the IPOD but ipodpatcher won't recognize it.  Not sure what to do as the 1G only has firewire?  Any suggestions?

Thanks to whoever went the extra mile to create a version for 1G/2G ipods!

there are no bootloader for the ipods 1G + 2G. It simply won't work. You'll just have to wait until one is released.

There are bootloaders for the 1st and 2nd generation iPods. There is no version of iPodPatcher for installing the botloader. iPodPatcher and the bootloaders are two different things, and it is important that people not get them confused.

Could they do something like the old instructions for installing via linux?  (I.e., use dd and make_fw to do the installation from a Linux box.)

There is no need for that.  There is both a working 1g2g bootloader and working support for the 1g/2g for ipodpatcher in SVN, it's just that they're not released yet.

So a user wanting to experiment with the 1g/2g port can build the bootloader and ipodpatcher from svn and install.

Cool!  Although I'm not one of those users.   :)

Just realized that Rockbox Utility (http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/RockboxUtilityQt) should be able to recognize and install on those Ipods -- it was build after the 1G / 2G got added and it includes a recent ipodpatcher from svn.

(Besides, it would be really interesting to get feedback about Rockbox Utility ;) )

Yes, but there is no bootloader on the server for rbutil to download and install....

Was a slip of the tongue (as it were) on my part. I actually meant Ipodpatcher and I do know the difference  :P

I really ought to learn how to compile, I'd be really curious to see how the thing works on an iPod 2G.

I gave it a shot and it won't recognize a 1G ipod over firewire, even if I tell it where the Ipod is located and what type it is.  Ends with "No Ipods found. . ."

Does the Ipod show up as drive in windows?

I, too, am trying to put rockbox on a 2g.

I snagged RockboxUtilityQt from:
Windows binary  m1.0.1 / r14595  http://download.rockbox.org/rbutil/win32/rbutilqt-v1.0.1.zip

The ipod does show up as a drive letter in windows.

When I run RUQ and press autodetect, it does indeed detect the 1/2G ipod and selects the proper drive letter.

It prompts to install the latest bootloader, but after continuing past prompts I get a dialog that says no ipods are found.

What can I do to provide more helpful information?

Please read the earlier posts in this thread - there is _no_ released version of the bootloader for the 1g/2g ipods yet, so none of the existing install utilities (ipodpatcher or rbutilqt) will be able to install the bootloader.

You will either need to be patient, or download the Rockbox source code from SVN and build the bootloader (and ipodpatcher) yourself.

I had, but sometimes responses are not entirely clear. For instance:

There are bootloaders for the 1st and 2nd generation iPods. There is no version of iPodPatcher for installing the botloader.

I did see the reply post saying there were none on the server but figued I'd try what I could before building. I wasn't sure if I was missing something noobish. Will attempt a build myself.

Cheers and thanks for the reply.

Yes, I know that this thread has contained mixed messages - my post was an attempt to clarify things.  Apologies if I sounded harsh.

And you pointed me in the right direction. Compiled the bootloader and ipodpatcher. Booted, plays music. I'm sure I'll fiddle.

slightly OT (my apologies.)
If you wondered what I did (I used a new 7.04 ubuntu install):
-make sure you have build-essential installed via synaptic/apt-get/etc
-grab the svn packages for ipodpatcher and rockbox as per compilation guides
-use the arm dev installer script in rockbox tools dir (rockboxdev.sh)
-add the arm bin to path as suggested at the end of the arm toolset installer script
-make the bootloader
-make ipodpatcher, copy the bootloader to where you built/copied the ipodpatcher bin
-ipodpatch away (ipodpatcher -a )

results of my x86 compile:

-edit: use the new version of ipodpatcher, rather than this build.

Just as a note, this shouldn't be considered "Supported" and it may be best to simply wait for the official bootloader release (which should be in a matter of days).

Yes it does.  I am able to install the rockbox software.  It's just the bootloader that isn't working which makes sense as there isn't an ipodpatcher version that recognizes firewire yet.  I will look for it over the next couple of weeks.  .  . but thanks for trying to help

Just a quick update ... I just successfully installed the latest release r14831 on my 2Gen Firewire iPod (20G) using the new iPodpatcher v2.0 with v2.0 bootloaders.

You guys Rock(box)!
