What operating system are you trying to install on?

Please post the output of the About / System Info dialog in Rockbox Utility (you can CnP from that dialog)

You should also answer the question from bluebrother, and did you right click and run as administrator?

The Ipod should show up below the "Attached USB devices" section but it does not. So the PC doesn't recognize the Ipod as USB device for some reason. What makes you sure I: is the Ipod?

How is the Ipod connected to the PC? Are you using a hub between PC and Ipod or are you using a front usb port of the PC? Still, the Ipod *needs* to show up in the list of USB devices.

Is it an MSC/MTP issue maybe?  I have the impression that "Enable disk use" or manually managing music is necessary to switch to MSC mode on the iPod (e.g. you have to safely eject the player in this situation).  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1478

The iPods which Rockbox support do not have an MTP mode. The "Enable disk use" switch in iTunes just stops the iTunes services from hiding the disk drive from windows Explorer.

Would hiding from Windows Explorer also hide it from Rockbox Utility?

edit: On second thought, I doubt it.  It shows up in Rockbox Utility, just not as a USB device.  Vista strangeness?

I doubt that. Rockbox Utility enumerates all attached USB devices (using windows setupapi calls). In his case there are no USB devices showing up which is really strange -- it could happen if on devices are attached, but the Ipod definitely is a USB device.

How are USB devices attached to your computer? Is there anything else attached via USB?

The Ipod should show up in the list of USB devices regardless of its generation. As no USB devices show up something looks fishy there. Have you tried a different PC?
