Title: iRiver H320 +Rockbox Micro SDXC 64GB Success!
Post by: bastiblt69 on October 27, 2015, 12:00:55 AM
Hey everyone,

I can confirm success on the following setup:

>>> Iriver H320 (20gb) firmware w/ bootloader from http://goo.gl/TsbRq1 (http://goo.gl/TsbRq1)
>>> Last Rockbox from Installation Utility
>>> SD Card to 1.8'' CE ZIF 50Pin IDE HDD Adapter Converter ( see on eBay http://goo.gl/WUj8ky (http://goo.gl/WUj8ky)))
>>> M icro SDXC Sandisk 64GB Extreme - using SD Adapter
(http://i57.tinypic.com/111sabq.jpg)

Simple instructions:

1. Install rockbox last version using the Utility
2. Install the mentioned bootloader - the second on list (don't forget to do the MD5 check)
3. Copy the partition from the HDD on the iRiver into the SDXC Card (fat32 format 32K), as is.
note: If you are going for it, I'd suggest keeping a fresh-copy so you can copy on multiple SD's
4. Take HDD off the iRiver
5. Insert Adapter, and then the card to it
6. That's it

There's just one problem: The damn adapter+card combo is a bit bigger than the player (just a bit) - I'm thinking on a DIY mod so I can keep it and use multiple cards, that will probs sort me out forever.

I will be uploading pictures soon.

Kind regards,
B

Hi bastiblt69!

What a nice try and what a success! Some more pictures of you device would be really great!

Your modification sounds really promising because it is most probably the least energy consuming mod with (S)SD memory that one can think of. What is your realistic life time of playing music? 40h?

Having an micro-SDXC slot in the IRIVER would be simply amazing. micro SDXC cards are available up to 128 GB as far as I know. Have you had the chance to try 128 GB?

Some time ago I tried to mod my H340 with an 240GB SSD from Intel
(http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,50602.0.html)
and experience no success. Now I may retry it with a new adapter.
Well, SSD mods allow currently up to 1 TB in some IRIVER players
(http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,48399.0.html and http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,48456.0.html).
As you have figured out in your previous thread
(http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,51049.0.html)
a chain of adapters is most likely not to work due to cheap quality reason of the individual adapters. Those adapter chains a currently needed for SSD mods and this may be a difficulty compared to a single adapter solution for SDXC.

If you want to go for max capacity use SSD at the cost of adapter headaches and potentially reduced battery life (depending on SSD model used). And it is not cheap!
If you want to go for min weight and max battery life time use SDXC currently limited to 128GB.

Do you think my conclusions are correct?

Hey buddy,

Thanks for your message. I have actually been working on this, and unfortunately I''m still waiting for some parts so I can fit the slot inside the iRiver - haven't stopped so I will be posting photos as soon as I have them.

Regarding your questions:

> Battery Life: I have chosen the SDXC mod for that exact same reason. Seems to me it will be the less-consuming method. As soon as I'm live with the experiment I will run a full battery test, and perhaps we can compare with ones from SSD's to see if we get more performance
> Adapter-Memory Size: I find this method so versatile because I can run a pretty big SD and change it - Also I can have several SD's and keep them handy in case I'm travelling (which is what I will do) so eventually I can keep more memory that a 1TB even... Cost/benefit I don't know for now, but I can bet SDXC will become more and more big and prices will keep going down - Well, at least for me it's a win/win.

Perhaps you can try the same mod, and see how you go. will recommend using the parts I shared as they work 100%

S

"Copy the partition from the HDD on the iRiver into the SDXC Card"....how can I do that? Please explain in details. This will be my firs time trying upgrading with a 64GB SD card. Thank you!
