Title: Genius/AutoDJ playlists on RockBox
Post by: psgarcha92 on February 08, 2011, 04:41:43 PM
hey guys
have been looking for this since a few days already.i have a RockBoxed Sansa Fuze v2.
now i have used ipods for some time and like the playlist and shuffle features they carry with them.like shuffle all the collection and u r good to go (i still havent found out how to shuffle and play all songs on RockBox), also the genius feature is quite cool. the question is, are there any ways to export these Genius playlists and run them on RockBox? or better if any utility would allow me to AutoDJ the songs, anything like that?
i use MediaMonkey, if thats needed.and My Sansa is a 4GB + 16GB microSDHC

please do tell me how to shuffle all songs in my player.

please do tell me how to shuffle all songs in my player.

You should really read the manual before asking questions here ;)
To give you an idea, you need to set the repeat mode to "All", and the easiest way to play all tracks on the player is to use the Database (after it is initialized), as it will play all files without looking at the directory they are in.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot about turning on shuffle.

Is a "Genius playlist" different then a regular playlist?

Thanks gbl08ma.

hey saratoga
genius playlists are based on ratings collected from people using itunes all over the world.loosely saying, these playlists contain "songs that go well together".its like i select a song in my library, and use the "make genius playlist" option, and a playlist with songs that go well with the selected songs is created (ofcourse all the songs in this playlist are from my library)
iTunes collects the data on the computer, and delivers it to the iPod too, and so we can make Genius playlists on the go too. but, i'd just like to have a way to use these playlists on RockBox (let iTunes do the genius stuff, and implement the playlist on my player)

So I guess the answer is "no its just a regular playlist".  Try saving it as an M3U file and it should work in rockbox.

But wont the paths/directories be different for the computer and the Fuze?
i mean on my computer, i generate this Genius Playlist through iTunes, and export it. Would just copying these M3U playlists to the player work?

AFAIK Genius playlists as Apple made them, are more than just a M3U file, IDK if they can be saved to a M3U.
Perhaps, you'll have to save in Apple's own playlist format, discover where the playlist file is, copy it, and convert it to M3U (this because I don't think that iTunes uses M3U as default... if it uses or supports, then my reputation of Apple just got a +1 to add to the -370 rating count :D)

hey gbl08ma,
these Genius Playlists can be made in iTunes, and then exported as M3U files anywhere we want to.
but saratoga said just copy the M3Us to the player, and that doesnt work, so i guess i would have to delete the Default library i have in iTunes and use the sings on my player as the library in iTunes.so that way, the exported M3U files will be linked to the songs on my player and not on my Computer.
any better way to do this???

Hey guys
i followed the following procedure:
deleted my default itunes library (based on songs from my HardDisk), connected the sansa and made my sansa as the library in itunes, then updated genius, made a playlist (Genius Playlist), tried playing songs from it, and they played fine.i happily exported the plalist to M3U, and pasted it into my player
but when i try to play the songs, its empty all the time (both in OF and RockBox)
hpw do i do it then?

It may be related to http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,27186.0.html . How do first few lines of your playlist look alike if opened with notepad? It may be the issue with absolute/relative pathnames.

As far as I understand it, playlists are read as is. It would be nice for windows users if possible disc name would be trimmed on-the-fly thus making possible to use playlists with absolute paths in them (of course if they are still on the same media, e.g. internal/external flash).

Hey psgarcha92,

on the "play all files shuffled problem", check:

http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,25125.0.html

I personally navigate to the top directory ("MUSIC" in my case, where I stored all the music) and select "Play Next" in the context menu of the folder.

Greetings,

c_k

This is exactly how it already works :)

Directories (and drive letters) are stripped from the beginning of the paths in the playlist one at a time until the file is actually found, so "D:\Stuff\Other\Music\Best Song Ever.mp3" in a playlist will find "\Music\Best Song Ever.mp3" on the player.
