Title: Voice not working for database menus on newly installed RockBox on 5.5G (30Gb)
Post by: te on December 26, 2007, 04:27:14 PM
I must have wasted a lot of money and time on this project. My son is blind, and I really wanted to give him a talking iPod.

I got a 30Gb iPod (5G), and used the RockBox Utility for automated installment. Everything worked but installing talk files (were "path to encoder" came as error no matter what path I´d choose).
It starts ok, and plays the .ogg files I put on it. It reads menus, HOWEVER NOT menus under Database - which really are the ones which matter.
Using VoiceBox I put appropriate talk files so that it will read directories (folders) and title names under the "Files" menu - however the automated voice generated by VoiceBox makes it next to impossible for my son to understand what is actually being said for each song file.

It feels exhausting - if voice talk for menus under "Databases" actually worked we´d be home free.

I see others have had similar problems - it looks to me to be a bug - I truly hope some developer could look into this!

(And, trying to report it as a bug, I never managed to login, maybe because I haven´t received an email with a new password?)

Voice talk clips don't work in the Database. Talk files only talk the filename, the database has a wide range of extra strings (album name, genre, etc) for which no voice clips are currently generated, so it would be impossible to speak them as things currently stand.

The voice used for menus is pre-created on a PC. The same voice can be used for talk clips, just select the same voice you selected for the menu voice. Rockbox doesn't have a voice of its own, it only uses pre-recorded clips.

Thank you for a swift response!

If I understand you correctly - menu items were not supposed to be read aloud under the Database hierarchy?- I guess I do not understand why the folders "Album" or "Artist" couldn´t be spoken by the same voice which says "resume playback" or "database".

Now, after having used voiceBox to create talk clips for the File hierarchy, how do I change/select that voice (currently there is two different voices speaking, one installed together with RockBox (english.voice) and a different one speaking the talk clips I have installed manually)?

"Artist" and "Album" aren't really names, they're not permanent. They're just what are written in the tagnavi.config file. The main Rockbox menus are essentially "permanent" (permanent means they're in the language file, basically).

You don't have two "voices" installed. You have one big audio file (like an MP3) that different parts of are played for the menus. Then you have lots of little audio files that are played depending on which file is highlighted. What "voice" these have depends entirely on what voices you use to generate it. If you're using someone else's .voice file, then you need to ask them what voice they used, and purchase and use that same voice when making your .talk clips, if you want them to sound the same.
