Put your c200 series in MSC mode.

for some reason the bootloader does not recognize the c240 under devices, even though it appears as a drive in 'my computer'

I assume that by bootloader you really mean sansapatcher?
If so, you need to be logged in with administrative privileges when you run sansapatcher.

how do i do that on vista?
usually i right click and run as administrator but since its a link...i cant do that.

actually i just saved it then ran as adminstrator and it still says no c200s or e200s detected

Do you have a Micro SD card in the c250's reader? My PC wont recognize my player until I pop that puppy out. Once USB detects the c250, I can plug the card back in and Windows is happy with it. Worth a try, anyway.

no i dont have a card in the reader.
there is no reason why it shouldnt recognize it because my computer recognizes it.

try turning "user account control" off (control panel - user accounts). remember to turn it back on again after you are done...

Hi alinasept (and others),

Did you ever find a solution?

I am having the same challenge.

Today I purchased a Sansa c250, knowing that I could put the Rockbox firmware on it.
However... for some reason I cannot get the bootloader to see the device.

I have Vista Home Premium and have done the following...

After following the manual (and I think maybe the manual could be clearer about how to put in MSC mode, and if needing to change file to FAT32)...

-- Set the c250 in MSC mode (UMS mode) by:
1)turning off the c250
2)turning it on
3)putting the hold button into lock
4)pressing on the Previous/Rewind button WHILE plugging in the USB cable
(the USB cable already plugged into the computer's USB port)
as indicated in these two links
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21421
http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=view&message.id=288&query.id=10213

-- I also read that recognition of the c250 depends on the disk layout
http://91.191.140.131/irc/rockbox-20070921.txt

then found a thread that spoke of making sure the sansa disk layout was formatted in FAT32
so I did that...
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=12800.15

-- Also, I have turned off  “User Account Control”.

-- No cards in the reader.

-- Have run Rockbox Utililty and all other downloaded files can now be found on the sansa.

EDIT

-- Also found this thread that spoke of checking the partitions on the c250
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=12239.15

and, after searching found the TestDisk program,
which seemed to indicate there was but one partition on the c250
so maybe my problem is that I do NOT have the needed hidden partition
and now need help creating it?

END EDIT

2nd EDIT

After reformatting to FAT32, the disk manager showed FAT32 format on the c250
Yet, when looking at it just now, it doesn't show up in the top screen of
Vista's Computer (right click) > Manage > Storage > Disk Management window.
I can drag and drop music files to the device... so it works in some fashion...
I'd better stop before I do something really silly.

END 2nd EDIT

... and yet I get the same error messages when running
either the sansapatcher.exe  or the Rockbox Utility for sansa.

This is not "MSC" mode (that's how Sandisk calls their mass storage mode) but recovery mode!

If you read your links thoroughly, they describe things on the Sansa View and I wouldn't trust in things being exactly the same just because it's a Sansa too - and on c200/e200 this recovery mode gives you access to a 16MB hidden partition which you don't have to touch during a normal installation.

To get it into MSC mode, you need to change the "USB" settings in the settings menu of the original firmware to "MSC" - so this is something you would need to find in the original firmware('s manual)! If it is not there, check the "system info" in the very same menu. If it's either version 1.00.05 or 1.00.06 you would need to upgrade your original firmware version because Sandisk disabled MSC mode in these two. I would think that the firmware upgrade still works and should be described on Sandisk's site, but didn't have to and never was interested to do a firmware upgrade myself.

Please be more careful with the information you find, read thoroughly and only try things if you know what you do (e.g. I don't know what your formatting already did, it wasn't necessary for me).

Edit: I'll see what I can do to make the manual clearer.

Hi,

I just got off the phone with a Sansa tech
(after not finding a USB option in the SETTINGS menu, and seeing that the manual says
"Sansa MP3 player will automatically detect and connect to MTP or MSC mode with is supported by your PC.")

I have installed the newest firmware - v03.02.05A
... which, I was told, *eliminates* the option of selecting MSC via the firmware SETTINGS menu.
( and no way to go back to older firmware.)
But...
I was told that with this newest version of the firmware...
to get to MSC mode -  turn on the device while HOLD is on, then press and hold 'rewind' while attaching the cable.
And recovery mode (made sure to ask) - turn on while HOLD is on, then press and hold 'record' while attaching the cable.)

At this point I continue to get the same two error messages as noted at the end of my previous post when I try to install the bootloader, either with the Rockbox Utility or manually using sansapatch.exe
And, if I ignore the bootloader piece... the rest of the Quick Start > Complete Installation seems to work quite well.

noble_rogue, from the firmware it looks like you have the V2 version (http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1376) and from another thread it looks like V2 is not supported so far by Rockbox: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=12995.0

Maybe you could use the following instructions to disassemble your player, take some photos of the chips and pass them on to the Rockbox developers so that they can see if Rockbox can be ported:
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2006/11/sandisk-sansa-c200-disassembled.php

Another thing is that the Rockbox web-pages and documentation should mention that the V2 version is not (yet) supported.

Yes.  You are right.  Thank you.
I took my c250 apart per the directions.  Unfortunately, my camera was unable to focus well, but the layout of the electronics is significantly different than show on the disassembly link of the v1 c250.

So, I would encourage folks here to add a big asterisk to the c250... I gather it's become like the ipod with a second generation and rockbox won't work with the 2nd generation yet.  I strongly second your recommendation to have this information in the manual and on the 'what rockbox works with' page, because that is why I chose the c250... with the goal of having rockbox.

While the pictures were useless, I made some notes...
(for folks to pass on to the developers).
I hope this helps, or encourages someone to take the pictures so that before too long your "not (yet)" can be changed, one way or the other.

Oops, I'm really really sorry because I was the one who didn't read thoroughly (drew the conclusion about recovery mode too quickly, I only tried it once and didn't think about which button I had to held  :-\ )

At least you could figure out what was going on with the helpful info and link to the sandisk site from skaos. Thanks for starting to gather chip information, the better place for it would probably be the wiki though.

P.S. I'll point someone with the power to put a warning on the frontpage to this thread.

Given that that you noble_rogue is the first user here with a c200 v2, can you check the photos of the regular c200 v1 and see if you can figure out a useful way to visually detect differences between v1 and v2?

Do you know if there's a firmware (mi4 + BL) available for the v2 anywhere?

Other than that, we really prefer actual photos of the circuits to better work out exactly what they are.

The SanDisk *-1024 ones are likely to be NAND flashes

The EMST is likely to be SDRAM

The other SanDisk is interesting, can it be NOR flash or is it a SanDisk-branded (PP-based?) soc?

Anythingbutipod has just disassembled the Sansa Clip where the SoC is marked something like (there may be a few misprints, the resolution of the photos are a bit low):

Sandisk
20-82-00133-2
S734-691090
SDC-SA216-1
Taiwan

That's similar to the C200-V2 ... I don't know if that brings you any further. It could be interesting to see how the PP-based SoC in the Sansa View is marked.

Hi Bagder, I just ran down to my local Radio Shack to look for a Sansa c240, and I've noticed three visual differences between a "V1" and a "V2" c200 series on the packaging:

1) On the upper right corner of the packaging, there will be a little square with the capacity marked. Under that, it will say "Up to xxx Songs" for v1, and "xxx Songs MP3" for a V2.

2) The font on the back of the package is either the "Li'l Monsta" font on a V1, or a more generic font for V2.

3) The line "Supports Audible File Formats" will be present in the list of features for a V2.

If anyone goes to a store that displays c200s out on the floor, then inspect the packages until you can find a V1.

Hello all and thank you for your comments and further help,

LambdaCalculus379 -

I looked at the box of my c250 v2 (purchased at Best Buy a week ago)... what I find is
1) On the upper right hand corner... "xxx songs for mp3"
and
3) "Supports Audible audio file formats" (instead of "Supports Audible file formats" as you wrote).
But
2) The font is "Li'l Monsta", even though it's a v2.

Badger -

I was doing well to take the critter apart and put it back together... and have it still work!
I really do wish I could take photos, but hopefully someone who can will be alerted and will do so.
I can say that once opened, it was glaringly obvious that the circuit board had a different layout than the v1 pictured on http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2006/11/sandisk-sansa-c200-disassembled.php
Even put back together, I recall how the v2 has a black SanDisk *-1024 chip above the coppery looking element (labeled 3650) in the 3rd photo from the bottom.

The firmware, I'm not so sure about... SanDisk has an automatic firmware updater.
I was able to find a page of old sansa firmware for the v1 ...
http://files.zefie.com/PMP/sansa/c200/firmware/
but I don't think that would do me much good. :)

other terms -- PP based SoC, I'm not as familiar with and can't be much help with.

MarcGuay -

I saw your note on the c200 page...
might I suggest relabeling the page the Sansa c200 v1 port?

I would highly recommend making it VERY obvious to those that are thinking of getting a c200 with the thought of using Rockbox that they really need to be sure that they aren't getting a v2.
Might I suggest
*** WARNING ***  Rockbox is not currently compatible with the V2 versions of sansa c200 models.

I think it would be nice to put right there how to identify a V2 instead of having folks have to read through this thread.  (I think I'll call SanDisk tomorrow and see if there's a simply way to tell V1 from V2 by the packaging.)  Also, yes, the hardware is different... so that section of the sansac200port page at some point could use the addition of the V2 hardware information... if only to note that the V2 c200s have different hardware.

Finally, it would be nice to know if / when a c200v2 port might happen...
but for now, I'm thinking either I'm stuck with the Sansa firmware...
or I see if Best Buy has some v1s hiding in the store and make an exchange...

If you're able to look at the back of the player this link has a picture of the label at the back of the V2 model: http://audible.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/audible.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3648&p_created=1192116189&p_sid=XU6j3AOi&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MiZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9ZTIwMA**&p_li=&p_topview=1
There also is a picture of the yet to be introduced e200-V2 - wonder if this have similar hardware changes.

Googling for 20-99-00112-2 produced this page which may suggest that the c200-V2 is Telechips based: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaM200Port

Interesting!

But if it would use the same Telechips as m200 (TCC770) it has an external codec, so then one of the other chips should be that...

The Buyer's Guide (http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/BuyersGuide) page on the wiki has been updated to let people know about the "v2" Sansa c200s.

I think we should continue discussion of the v2 Sansa c200s in the New Ports section, since this technically does mean we need to start a new port for them.
