Title: One last revision of new Brickmania bitmaps - CVS ones are no longer an option.
Post by: midkay on June 11, 2006, 07:34:41 PM
Hi all,

As it turns out, there could potentially be some copyright trouble with the current Brickmania bitmaps. Along with the fact that we *need* new bitmaps for 320x240 (and potentially new/larger LCDs in the coming months/years), I decided to start a new poll. I would have probably left the idea alone after the mixed results of the last few, but this is it - the CVS ones are no longer an option. :)

Here are the three possibilities; the first is similar to the second revision of the bitmaps with plainer shading, and the second is the same as the first, but has slight left-to-right shading as the current bitmaps do. The third is the same as the second, except the left-to-right shading is darker.

First bitmaps, standard shading:

Second bitmaps, slight L-to-R shading:

Third bitmaps, darker L-to-R shading:

Thanks for your patience and input on these, everyone. :)

I voted for the third ones because for me they have the best 3D look
and I like the textures.

I could also live with the second ones - but the first one don't look good to me ;)

I'm liking the first or the second ones.. and the second ones are currently getting the most votes. I'll give it another day at least, though...

I still don't get where the lightsource is supposed to be... do the bricks indent partway through? Is that why they're lightest on the left side, lighter on the right side, and dark partway through as if they curve? ;)

Dunno, it's weird, really, but people seem to like it. :)

I don't mind the subtle shading of #2, though; I kind of like it.

Two is subtle enough that I'm not really bothered by it. Three honestly drives me nuts, just looking at them. But then, I'm perhaps just a wee bit obsessive-compulsive.

I voted 2, becasue I think 3 is a bit too contrasted, but I prefer some shading over none.

Sure.. in fact I'll probably need to completely redraw these at a larger resolution, and if I do I'll make the shading a tad-bit lighter ;) (if #2 is the winner).

Well, real bricks have more texture than shading, really.

The shading happens between them, shadows on the mortar/grout/whatever.

But yeah, I'm fine with 2, though my vote was for 1.

Real bricks don't vanish when you hit them with a ball, though, so realism in this case is second to aesthetics.  And in my opinion the 2nd bricks are the nicest looking :D

Ha! I'm with Yotto on this one. Well said.

Cool, so everyone seems to like or at least be fine with the second ones. :)

Unless something changes within 4-5 hours I'll probably get to redrawing them larger and commit them later today.

Alright, so quite clearly #2 is the winner. Rescaling them correctly for different LCD sizes will be a bit harder than I hoped, due to aspect ratio differences.. still, I'll do it soon. :)

While you're resizing, simplify the Archos Recorder ones if you could. They look kinda... bad... to me on target.

Perhaps - the whole game looks/runs pretty bad IMO on the Recorder. The paddle is really *big*, and the game speed is way too fast to really know what you're doing - you often activate powerups you barely even got to see, let alone make out what the letter on them was...

I'll try to tweak it to a better speed/usability.

I didn't find issue with the speed or anything, but then I'm kinda used to my arkanoid-like games being rather fast. It is faster than the others though, as you said.

It just seemed silly to have different textures on the bricks since the screen is so tiny anyway... just kinda looked bad in my humble opinion. :)

one thing i dont like about brickmania on the h1xx is the little boxes that fall. like the [d] has a box with a D in it. well i really cant see these from far away. so i have to look very close at the screen and squint to see what it is.  are these more clear on the ipods as they have a bigger screen and also color which means they could be different colors?

The H100s have a reputation for slow LCDs that blur with any kind of fast motion. This is less of a problem on other supported mono/grayscale LCDs, and the color LCDs are even better about it - on my iPod 5G, I can see the powerups quite clearly, no blurring, and they have lots of time to be caught, due to the LCD size.

Right, I'll see what I can do. :)
