Title: Switching from SAT to MP3 from scratch
Post by: amakahi on October 19, 2007, 05:41:31 PM
Greetings,
 ???
Ok, here's the issue.  I have installed Rockbox already (absolutly awesome), but as others in the forums have done, I have transfered 10GB of music to my computer in .SAT format before I installed your program.  The issue that has not been addressed is what to do when your Gigabeat doesn't have a GBSYSTEM folder at all and you don't have a backup or copy of this folder anywhere on your computer.  I too would like to not throw all my cd's back in if I can help it but I don't see a way to utilize the Remove_SAT_Encryption_Optional process to switch my music.  Any advice would be much appreciated, Thanks.

You do have a GBSYSTEM folder, as otherwise neither the original firmware nor rockbox would boot.  It is set to both hidden and system so you need to change explorer to view these.  Part of the rockbox installation is replacing a file in the GBSYSTEM directory.

Just swap the rockbox version back with the backup of the original you made during installation (as the installation instructions told you to do), then do the SAT removal.

You need to use the Gigabeat Original Firmware to do the SAT removal.

Alright, I may be stubborn but I'm not trying to be difficult.  Maybe I'm screwed or maybe I'm missing something, but here:  my "hidden files and folders ->Show hidden files and folders", and the "display the contents of system folders" are both checked in my explorers' folder options, and the following folders are shown in my Gigabeat:
.rockbox
games
Music Vault (my music folder)
My Music
New Folder
picture
Playlists
I don't know.  Like I said I may be at a dead end, but if not please someone let me know.  Thanks again.

--I didn't make a backup of the GBSYSTEM folder before installing Rockbox as I didn't see this folder before installation.  Hopefully my demise is not sealed.

So what happens when you try to type the path into Explorer?  BigBambi is correct that Rockbox could not boot if you did not have that folder on your Gigabeat.  Did you use RButil to install Rockbox?

Yes I used the utility to install Rockbox and it's not showing anything like a system folder besides .Rockbox.  I believe you that I would need the folder to properly run RB but if it's any significance...when I try to uninstall RB and turn it on it simply says no operating system present or something to that affect.  I have full viewing permissions on in Explorer and can't see said folder in my GB.  I wonder if I could write a scrypt to do the process that is done on the Remove_SAT_Encryption_Optional without the GBSYSTEM folder to remove the SAT encryption since it seems I'm simply SOL.  I'd be happy to hear from more people.  Thanks again for the forum and the OS.

...OK, so I partially stand corrected...still confused though...didn't see it using the drop-down view but when I manually typed E:\GBSYSTEM\ and hit enter two things popped up: IMAGE (dir) and the file MDB.  Inside IMAGE is:
10 GBP files with names like 36FF7F66BC993ADF.GBP and alternating between sizes of 11kb and 79kb.  Tell me I'm still missing something and I'll be a happy man.  =)

By uninstalling you mean via RButil?

You didn't mention what happens when you type the path into Explorer (or a command prompt).

Could you type in E:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG in Explorer now ?

And post an actual screenshot of what you see ?

Ok, sweet it was my fault and I'm glad I was wrong.  I don't understand though, with permissions to see all files why is it that I need to manually type it in to get to the GBSYSTEM folder/subfolder in explorer?  Doesn't make sense.  Well I hope my little escapade helps someone out there as frustrated as I was.  Appreciate the patience guys.   :D

No problem, I'm glad you got it sorted.

One more thing guys.  Ok my Gigabeat was set to Gigabeat room instead of WMP10 when I installed Rockbox, and I never made a backup of the GBSYSTEM folder because I didn't see it when I was ready to install Rockbox.  Now that I'm trying to switch from SAT to MP3 I'm not having any luck removing the encryption and I read somewhere in the forums that if you don't have it set to WMP10, than you need to uninstall RB and switch it to WMP10 in the settings.  I can't get to the settings because I can't load the origional OS.  When I remove RB and turn it on all I get is:
NO SYSTEM FOUND ON HDD
am I missing something?  Apparently I do that often =)  if not, is there a way to get a genaric GB OS so I can switch the player from GBR to WMP10, or is it simpler than that?  Thanks again lol.
*Correction it doesn't say NO SYSTEM FOUND ON HDD after I switched the battery off/on, now says:
Rockbox Boot loader
Version R13224:13225:070421
Loading Firmware
File not found
...and of course when I try to uninstall the bootloader, the progress box says  (-) Could not find the Origional Firmware at E:\/GBSYSTEM/FWIMG/FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG
I hope it's one of the problems that someone solves with a one-line response lol.

The FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG is necessary if you are going to want to get rid of the SAT encryption. You have (using WMP) transfer all of your music off of your gigabeat in the original firmware. It will be a slow process. Then, switch to Gigabeat Room and install rockbox onto the player. Then you can transfer all of your music back onto rockbox.

I'm almost positive you can't install rockbox when the gigabeat is in WMP mode.

Problem is I can't install the origional firmware as I don't have it.  As I said above, when I origionally installed RB, I didn't see a GBSYSTEM folder and so I didn't make a backup.  I'm trying to find out what I can do without being able to get back to the origional Operating system.

edit: I've found the files in toshiba\gigabeat x.x\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG, but when I copy FWIMG files into the FWIMG folder on the GB it doesn't do anything to get rid of RBloader.

Did you flip the battery switch off and on to go to the original?
