So rockbox is on the e200r.'
So the e200r uses the same fimware as the e200 right, so you should use the sansa build, but puting it on the sansa right now would be dangerous right, but once on it has dual bootloader right? and All things that apply to the sansa e250 would apply to the sansa e250 except for the instalation right?
-
That's correct. The installation, however, is still a little complicated and
you have to follow the instructions to the T, otherwise you will have ended up with a nice black paperweight.
The wiki page is here: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaE200RInstallation
I would recommend you go pick up a Linux LiveCD like Knoppix, which is linked to on that wiki page I gave you.
And remember... READ THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE T. I can not stress that enough. One mistake will bork your Sansa.
On second thought, wait until we have a more proper installation method.
-
So rockbox is on the e200r.
So the e200r uses the same fimware as the e200 right?
No - it uses it's own firmware. It *can* use the same Rockbox firmware as the vanilla e200 though.
, so you should use the sansa build, but puting it on the sansa right now would be dangerous right
No - not dangerous at all - it just wouldn't do anything.
but once on it has dual bootloader right?
No - if all you've done is put the sansa build on, then it's still only got the sansa's bootloader, and therefore won't run Rockbox.
and All things that apply to the sansa e250 would apply to the sansa e250 except for the instalation right?
I have no idea what you're asking here.
-
I have no idea what you're asking here.
Maybe he wants to know if all of the features the Sansa port offers are the same on the Rhapsody?
-
yes
-
In that case yes - the e200 and e200r are feature identical when running Rockbox.
-
Is there a way to get back my sansa is some thing goes wrong (i backed up ma sansa and i am ready to paste it back in the sansa if needed). Also what i meant is; is the sansa rockbox fimware the sansa as the sansa rhapsody fimware(rockbox), because that's the one's we're using. Is the sansa e200 fimware (rockbox) going to be using as the e200r (rockbox fimware)?
-
Yes there is a way to restore, but the way to get it back is basically the same process that is used to get Rockbox on the Sansa in the first place, so if you can't get Rockbox on correctly, you likely are going to have some issue restoring it.
And your clarification doesn't really clarify much... Are you asking about which model to choose when downloading the build?
-
If what you're asking is "Is there a special e200r build of rockbox?" then the answer is no. It's the same build as the usual sansa e200 rockbox build.
The difference is in both the bootloader, and in the method to install it.
I *REALLY* don't recommend you try to do it yet.
-
ok fine but will there be a installer for rockbox like the e200?
..... rockxbox installer (for e200r) to put on rockbox on your e200r?
-
Yes - we're working on it right now this second.
-
Don't worry about it too much, Shane. Sit back and relax and let the guys do their thing.
-
Much appriciated when it is finished post here so i can test it out!!
I will tell you how it goes and bugs and such.
So yall going to make a modified version of the e200 manual?
-
As soon as we know what to write in it - then yes.
But since we've not quite worked out HOW we're going to do the simple install yet, much less WHAT to do - there's not much point doing it yet.
Patience!!!
-
ok, ok , fine sorry for my impatience : :D
-
Sheesh - you kids today! ;)
-
.... i resent that :@
-
Lighten up, he's just kidding around.
-
im instaling it now so standby for problems!!
-
You did read the bit that said "you must understand all these instructions before you start" didn't you ?
-
if did not work it says "load main image failed swithch to rcovrey mode"
plz help me :(
-
So that would be a "No" to my question above would it ?
Why didn't you just wait like I said???
-
i tried every thing like it said :( plz help me unbrick my player ??? :'(
-
Well, don't say we didn't warn you... :-\
You may be better off getting support on IRC (Web Client (http://www.rockbox.org/irc/cgiirc/irc.cgi))
-
how des that work?
-
Shane, we warned you that this is not for the faint of heart. I suppose if we tell you not to swim in a lake full of pirahnas, you would still do it anyway.
How can you be so bloody impatient and not wait until instructions were posted that made it easier to install Rockbox on a Rhapsody?? GodEater made it crystal clear to please wait!
-
im sorry just plz help me : :'( :'( :'(
-
Get on the IRC channel. Click the link bascule gave you.
-
Look, this is the one and final warning for this thread: "Plz" is not a real word, neither is "u" or "thx" or anything like that. You are expected to read the forum guidelines, and "I'm upset because I didn't follow the instructions properly" is not an excuse for ignoring them. You were warned several times in advance.
-
i unbriked it
-
Now wait until everyone simplifies the installation process, and for Hastur's sake PLEASE don't do something so foolish again!
-
ok
-
the tutorial says to use 1.0.2.31. Does the orig firmware matter?
-
ohhh no wander it did not work
-
you're talking about the sansa e200 fimware art you?
this is for e200r people.
-
He was talking about this file: http://daniel.haxx.se/sansa/e200/rhapsody/rhapsody-1.0.2.31.zip ; and yes, that is for the e200R Sansas.
-
That's a lower fimware?
but it seems the more you update the lesser the number gets?
from 1.0.2.31 -> 1.0.2.165????? ???
-
Version numbers do not always work the same as real numbers. Either one of those could be the newer version.
It's possibly you should read that as "Main version 1, sub-version 0, edition 2, revision 31" and "revision 165" or some other crazy scheme. People write version numbers in strange ways.
Either way, the instructions should be followed with exactly the files linked.
-
ok thanks
-
ohhh i think i know now, i did not pactch the bootloader  ;D
ohh you have to have the linus cd to put it on... ohhhhh
-
the tutorial says to use 1.0.2.31. Does the orig firmware matter?
It says that version since that's what's been tested and that's what's hosted on the mi4 site.
But no, the orig firmware version shouldn't really matter in theory.
-
ohh you have to have the linus cd to put it on... ohhhhh
You mean that you never even booted Linux the first time?? What in the bloody hell were you thinking!?
-
;D i thought that that was something else so i went to the part that said "install rockbox on windows" because i acusally wanted rockbox on my sansa i did not know that you had to do that first!!! ;D :D
Hopelly there will be a way (in the future) to put it on without linus.
-
There will be, and until that time comes, please take the advice that everyone has given you throughout this whole entire thread and be patient. You'll know when it's ready to go.
P.S.: Linus is the man, Linux is the operating system.
-
And also, when that easier installation is available, follow the instructions exactly. You claimed previously that "i tried every thing like it said" and now you've admitted that you skipped many, many steps. If there's a part that doesn't make sense, ask. Don't just skip it.
Even an easy install is not foolproof.
-
1) Please don't ask the same question in multiple places, this will be considered spam and at the very least all additional posts will be removed.
2) It's been said that a better way is being worked on. Have patience, or create one yourself, but there is no magic solution to the problem. Linux is better suited for the task at this time, and anyone who wants to badly enough can use the VMWare image or a linux liveCD without having to change from Windows.
-
As a note (it says this in the instructions as well), VMware will not work with this, as when a device is "handed" to VMware, it is first mounted to windows, then quickly unmounted from windows and then VMware is given access to it. This results in recovery mode being activated, it sensing a disconnect and rebooting, then going into recovery mode again. Recovery mode is needed to be activated *immediately* after manufacturing mode, so the install will not work.
That said, a linux liveCD will do the trick nicely and all that is required is downloading an iso, burning it to disk, and running it.
-
I Just successfully installed Rockbox on a newer e200r with the new scroll-wheel, Instead of mounting the device though it was located in /media/disk and i could see version.txt. All i did was drag the file into there instead of copying it because i didnt really no how to mount and as long as i could find it i would put the file in there. Then i rebooted and went into the standard firmware, nothing was changed and proceeded to install Rockbox. Instead of using the official build i used Chris's build on anythingbutipod.com. Installed quickly, rebooted set up theme/doom etc, and its all working just fine. Oh yea and i used Ubuntu 7.04 for the bootloader part.
Differences that i did for people who want it summed up are-
Didn't mount device, just dragged and dropped the file in
Used an unofficial rockbox build with misc. patches/fixes/themes
I may switch OF.mi4 to the newest Rhapsody firmware, currently using the one shown in the guide which is i think one of the first released for the e200r.
Thanks alot guys, the tutorial was pretty good for a semi-linux noob even though i dont no how to mount/unmount got it working :)
EDIT: Oh yea just to let people know, when i tryed using the e200tool at first i couldnt get it work, but then i realised that i wasnt root and i think the command i used was sudo -s to become root. If u need help becoming root google is ur friend also. if there is anything i can recommend changed it would be a discription on how to become root if your not.
-
Didn't mount device, just dragged and dropped the file in
Actually, you did mount it, you just didn't know it. Gnome went ahead and automounted it; were that not the case, you would not have been able to copy over the files.
-
yea, thats what happened thanks for explaining :). oh yea and i "Ejected" the mp3 too once i was done, when it said unmount. I had a feeling that was the same thing dunno if it was though.
-
i "Ejected" the mp3 too once i was done, when it said unmount. I had a feeling that was the same thing dunno if it was though.
It's the same, certainly. The instructions are written for the command line, since they're meant for more advanced users. I'd still recommend using mount and unmount instead of a graphical method, if only because I don't really trust gnome-volume-manager or pmount or whatever automounter is being used these days.
-
burning it to disk
Will Daemon Tools Work As Well? It's an ISO mounting application.
-

-oh, well if anything could of went wrong it would of right there because once i got to that part i just went off instinct, and took a while too. i don't really want to discourage people from doing it the graphical way, but im just pointing out that it worked for me if anyone was waiting for a confirmation of it working before they tried it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
-For linux, as in Ubuntu for example you will need to Burn the iso, i recommend using ImgBurn to do so. You will then have to choose your boot device before you boot into windows, for me its a press of the ESC key while in the Bios/Boot. Then choose to boot from the drive with the disc in it. You do not run Linux inside windows, although you can via Virtualization it is said not to in the guide. Basicly you are going to be booting straight to Linux (Like Ubuntu or whatever distro you perfer, rather than windows.)
-
Mabe is there could be some kind of emulator to similate being on linux mabe it would work ... :-\
Also do you have to go through this every time you need to update rockbox?
-
It would make much more sense for someone to simply get the tools working in Windows than to create some additional complicated program.
how to update Rockbox once it's installed is covered in the normal e200 manual.
-
ok, I like how the Dev's modified the instalation page, so that it is now CLEARLY stated that you need to patch the bootloader first. That will be helpful to non linus users.
-
My sansa BURNED out running rockbox. I was using it and it started to smell weird. The battery got really hot. I turned it off and it didn't come back on. Can I return it to Best Buy and say it was just defective?
-

You mean Linux right? I'm not entirely sure how one would use "Linus".
-
The battery got really hot.
My battery just exploded....It shot out a white goo. I don't think I can return it now... :'(
-

Also do you have to go through this every time you need to update rockbox?
1. The installation was tested with VMWare, which allows you to run Linux in Windows, though it was found it didn't work.
2. After Rockbox is up and running, you only need to unzip the new build onto your Sansa.

Which I explained just a few posts up...
-
Is there a way to boot to the sansa fimware and use l<< to go to rockbox?
-
Yes. You can set up a Linux development environment, modify the source code and then compile your own custom Rockbox build.
-
Yes. Â You can set up a Linux development environment, modify the source code and then compile your own custom Rockbox build.
Thank you for telling me that, but other than that you could not modify settings under windows?
*it seems Linux is better for excicuting tacks
*could this be tried by using mods (operating system)? or is is command prompt-since is uses text based functions?
-
You can use Windows, but you still need to set up a Linux development environment using something like Cygwin or VMWare. Read this: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome?topic=SimpleGuideToCompiling
-
It's not going to make any sense to do that because i need to get the original linux to even get rockbox on my player.
I'm just tring to toss around ideas so stop me if I am saying foolishness.
*mabe if we tried to replace (although that would not be smart because rockbox not a stable build for the sansa yet and will have a fex bugs) the original fimware like a update it would run rockbox only.
*but then again mabe this was said already when you (Rockbox people) said "the fimware could not be updated in this way... or something like that.
-
so stop me if I am saying foolishness
Consider yourself stopped. ;)
-
I think it's quite ovious that I can't help develop rockbox....
*the emulator that suposse to play game boy and/or game boy color games(i know it can't play advance because of the lack of prosser power) I heard that it can't run both the sansa fimware and the rock box fimware-is this true?
*If real releases an update for the sansa will that automatically change the bootloader (assuming we have rockbox on your player), thus bricking the player?- you can't update the bootloader
*(also assuming rockbox is on) Should we just update the sansa fimware (real fimware) or should we get advice from rockbox developers first?
-

This question doesn't make any sense at all. Rockboy is part of Rockbox. It does not run in the Sansa firmware.
*If real releases an update for the sansa will that automatically change the bootloader (assuming we have rockbox on your player), thus bricking the player?- you can't update the bootloader just update it
*(also assuming rockbox is on) Should we just update the sansa fimware (real fimware) or should we get advice from rockbox developers first?
Easy answer: once you run Rockbox, you won't care about the Sansa firmware.
-
;D unless you've just started your 2 months and have unlimited FREE access to music untill october :D
* The midi plugin will it be compatible with sansa?
-
I'm just tring to toss around ideas so stop me if I am saying foolishness.

Since the Sansa requires a 160 bit signature, which we can't get. This signature is checked every time you start up your player, which is why you kept getting "Load main image failed." By using a patched bootloader, we can remove the signature check, but to upgrade the bootloader, we need to use e200tool, which would basically the the same thing we are currently doing.
-
Can't we just (or at least me) ask them for it. Or is this because they saw the sansa e200 being themed, rockboxed and such and they wanted to stop people from moding there fimware?! (just like xbox and nintendo updates it's fimware to block mods systems to work)
-
wow this seems to be the fastest groing sansa thread :o ;D ;)
*a stable release is when all of the orginal features are on it + all rockbox stuff right?
-
Will Daemon Tools Work As Well? It's an ISO mounting application.
So you want to run a windows app to mount a Linux ISO image and then boot from this image? That makes no sense.
-
I have Rockbox installed on 2 e250rs now, one is older with old scroll wheel and one has the new scroll wheel, although there is 1 thing that i found everything else works without a hitch. Well this is cosmetic but the top row of pixels in the Official Firmware looks corrupted on my old e200, i think it also was on the new e200r but i gave that to my friend now so i cant say much about it. Im pretty sure they were both corrupt top row of pixels. Well either way can anyone help?
-
What build of Rockbox did you install?
-
I have Rockbox installed on 2 e250rs now,
Are you sure these are the r vertion and not a remake? Your tone sound like you just put on rockbox like nothing :-\
-

He said he has two SanDisk Sansa e250R digital audio players, both running Rockbox. I'm not sure what a remake would be considered...

If Sandisk was planning to give away the signature, they wouldn't have included a signature check in their bootloader.
-
He said he has two SanDisk Sansa e250R digital audio players, both running Rockbox. I'm not sure what a remake would be considered...
I have a sansa '280R', which is not a R. However on the back it says rhapsody, and that the model is 280R. I think that it is just a OEM-ed vanilla e280 which has been rebranded. Apparently, there are many people who have gotten the same model, which is only a 'faked' Rhapsody model. These models don't have the rockbox installation problems, but rather, are identical to a vanilla in all ways except the logo on the back, as far as I can tell.
-
Can't we just (or at least me) ask them for it
Sure, go ahead and ask them.
-

There's nothing stopping you asking. But I will eat my shoes if they turn round and say "sure, here it is".
-
ok i'll ask them ;D
-
If I were to get rockbox and and I patched the bootloader how would I get it back to a normal bootloader?
-
Please don't double post. Use the edit button.
You would get back to a "normal" bootloader by simply patching the "normal" bootloader back over it. However, I don't see why anyone would want to do this, as it has no ill effects on the OF and to get your device back to basically the original state, you just re-install the OF's mi4 over the Rockbox mi4.
-
If you wanted to return your sansa or if future updates (for the sansa fimware) would ask for the bottloader to be how it was.?
Please don't double post. Use the edit button.
you mean the modify button to took me a while to find it
-
The binary patch of the original bootloader is hardly anything any service engineer ever is gonna notice, or in fact, even be capable of checking.
-
If we deleted the bootloader we would replace it and we could have rockbox?
-
Can you at least wait until the solution is presented? Deleting an entire bootloader will simply render your player useless, since it won't know what to boot or where to look for what it needs.
Patience is virtue, Grasshopper! :)
-
Shane, this is getting silly now. The Rockbox developers know what they are doing. They know the problems, they know what can't be done and they have some good ideas for making the install process safer and easier.
Please please please just wait. I promise it'll be announced when it is done.
-
ok I promise i'll wait, and I won't post here unless I really need to, untill it is announced.
Please please please just wait. I promise it'll be announced when it is done.
It'll be announced on the changelog right?
-
Yes, every major change is announced on the changelog. Some are even announced on the forums, but that's a rare occurance.
Now go read a book and have a nice cup of tea or something, and we'll most definitely announce when a safe process is ready.
-
If i install rockbox will i be able to use the sansa dock with it and made for sansa accorieys? (is there a spell checker)
-
Shane.....
Rockbox on the E200R is the same as on the E200 and the same as on all the other targets bar hardware differences.
To learn about rockbox I suggest you read the E200 manual.
-
In fact, our posting guidelines require you to read the manual before asking questions. Moreover, most of the questions you have asked recently have nothing to do with installation, which is the subject of this forum. I think whatever useful purpose may have been served by this thread is now exhausted, so I am going to close the thread.
Per our posting guidelines, if you have questions about specific Rockbox features, you should (1) read the manual, and (2) search these forums. If you cannot find an answer from either of those two sources, then (and only then) may you start another thread specific to that question.
