Title: slow track skipping, etc. on 4G grayscale iPod
Post by: rockinfree on November 21, 2007, 01:11:59 PM
For the past couple weeks, my iPod (4G, grayscale) has been doing the following things ... and upgrading my build (currently r15722-071120)/running the disktidy app doesn't help:

- when the first song is played, it will skip for maybe 30 seconds/1 minute, but then acts normally (sometimes pausing the song at the beginning decreases the number of skips)

- when I skip more than 1 or 2 songs in a row, the elapsed time/total time on the "now playing" screen shows 0:00/0:00 for a minute or two before the song loads and plays

- reinitializing my database takes hours (I have ~5000 songs)

- doing a large "insert" operation (in the file view) takes forever -- it'll insert maybe 20 or 30 tracks in a minute

Any advice for what I should do? Thanks.

Try running a chkdsk on it?

Did that, twice -- the first time it found errors & fixed them, and the second time everything went fine:

No improvement with the initial iPod problems, though ...

Two other things to try:

1. Reset your settings. I think you can do this by turning off the player, and turning it back on with the hold button on.
2. Try a defrag and see if that fixes things.

Tried both options, but still couldn't see a noticeable difference. Any other suggestions?

Edit: I've reverted back to the original Apple firmware, which seems to have fixed everything for some reason. I still think Rockbox is awesome, but not for everyone ... and at least now my battery will last longer than 4 hours :P

Thanks to those who did reply!

It seems hard for me to believe that Rockbox would have performed so badly on your player, but nobody else noticed anything.  Can anyone else here confirm that recent builds are working completely properly on this target?  I wish people had paid more attention to this girl, you've lost a rockbox user due to your unwillingness to consider non-noobie issues here...

It's a bit hard to narrow down when only one person seems to be reporting the issue. You'd expect more posts if this was a general problem.

I have found that sometimes with major changes it is necessary after trying all the above to delete the .rockbox folder and then copy a new one to the player. It seems for minor changes you can simply copy over but certainly this does not always work properly afterwards.

I don't know if its related, but I have had some similar problems with my e200 after updating a couple of weeks ago ( around the time album art committed).

I often get long delays when starting the first track after turning on (says "loading" on the screen) & then get audio drop outs when playing for about the first minute or so.

I have updated many time since then to see if it was a problem that might get fixed but still no joy.

I have lurked in the forums also to see if anyone else has had a similar problem, but this is the first I've seen.

The problem is bad enough to revert to an earlier build, however I haven't
done that yet.

Any Ideas, Cheers.

Edit: Complete removal of Rockbox & reinstall reems to have fixed this.
