Title: Port for Pono Player
Post by: Legolad on January 27, 2016, 11:02:00 AM
Hello community,

I backed the Pono Kickstarter and have been enjoying my Pono since I got it. The audio quality and ability to play many lossless formats was my only concern.

Now I've used it for a while, I find that I really hate the firmware. It is a truly abysmal port of jRiver.

I know the Pono is an Android device. I'm not a programmer but I am a UI designer and I do Usability Research for a living. If there is any interest in doing a Rockbox port for Pono, I would be happy to help in whatever way I'm able.

If there is no interest, I'll be back in the market for a new player.  :-)

Take a look here:  http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/NewPort

The Pono player is (according to Google) based on an ancient version of Android.  You can probably hack that if you want to have some other interface or player software on top of the existing firmware, but that it will be a lot of work.  If you're not going to do it yourself, I'd suggest trying to find other people who have that player and see if they are interested in working on it.

There was a "Ladies and Gentlemen" mail sent out about playback on the Pono sometime around ~2014 if memory serves.

There wasn't actually a Hell of a lot that needed doing to the Android port in general to get it to run in the crippled environment that is a Pono (I'll touch on that more if prompted to), and I don't think any of it ever hit our sources because the guy working on it ended up bricking his player and the level of regard for that fact was truly minimal.

The crux of it is, basically, that it was a combination of two pretty terrible ideas (Rockbox as an App on Android, and the Pono player {I'll touch on that too, if prompted to, but since you backed it I'm not sure you want me to detail the wide and varied amount of ways it was a truly terrible idea}) slapped together to make one giant terrible idea.

But no one is going to stand in your way.

EDIT: The NewPort wiki page isn't particularly useful here, though it isn't entirely useless. It isn't entirely necessary to have a wide understanding of the hardware when running hosted - however if you intended to replace the operating system entirely, that changes a lot, both in the necessity of the steps detailed on that page and the sheer amount of work required to reach the end goal.

Pono Player OS is some of the worst ever created.
It has terrible music scanning time. It doesn't have ability to turn its screen off.
The OS developer guy of Pono was very incompetent at his job.

Would love to see rockboxed Pono one day.
