Title: archos JBR20 V1, 250gb not seen by vista or W7.????
Post by: 40apple40 on April 18, 2010, 03:29:50 PM
 hi

as the title says my JBR20 isn't recognised by vista or W7.
XP sees it ok.

because i've put a bigger drive in it (>137gb) i've partitioned it & used the appropriate nov 07 Rbox firmware. one of the partitions should be visible but neither is.
the player works fine apart from the problem above.

i've tried several different computers.

any ideas?

many thanks.

The USB bridge in the Archos Jukebox Studio and Jukebox Recorder V1 is from before USB mass storage was standardized. That means it needs a special driver, and is hence not supported out of the box like other USB mass storage devices.

Such a driver exists for Windows XP 32 bit, but since the bridge chip is pretty old, no such driver exists for Windows Vista and later, or for 64 bit windows versions.

Since it works for you in XP, you must have installed this driver at some point. If you're running 32 bit Vista or Win7 you *might* be able to use the XP driver. For 64 bit windows this is definitely impossible.

Linux has a driver for this bridge chip (the In-System Design ISD200) built in. You can use that (or an XP virtual machine) in conjunction with a virtual machine software, if you choose one with good enough USB pass-through capabilities. VMware Server 2.x definitely works, as that's what I'm using. VMware Player 2.5 or higher should work too.

Yes, you would still need the same driver in XP running in a virtual system (just as when running XP on a physical box).  Another virtualization product is VirtualBox.  The proprietary (but free in terms of price) version has supported USB pass-through for the last few releases.  (I phrase it this way because they also have an Open-Source Edition that does not include USB pass-through yet.)

thanks.

do you know if it'd work in XP mode with Windows Virtual PC?

i did try it a while ago but i may not have had the correct driver installed.

or are the other programs mentioned better programs anyway?

where can i download this driver from?
