Have you tried turning Hold on, and then off, and then holding Menu+Select for 30 seconds, while the iPod is plugged in?

If you have a software problem, that will work. If you try it several times, including the hold switch thing (very important), and it doesn't work, that suggests something hardware related has gone wrong.

what hardware issue could have possibly gone wrong? i mean, i just played some music off of it until it ran out of battery life, then i tried turning it on again the next morning lol... (not to sound caustic, just confused lol)

Well, if you JUST did that, either hardware failed normally, or you're not doing the Menu+Select thing properly.

The iPods have a bug in their flash bootloader that sometimes causes them not to want to wake up when the battery has run out (even if charged some after). Are you really, really doing the Hold Switch, AND holding Menu+Select (not Menu+Play, or any other combination) for a whole 30 seconds, without wiggling your fingers?

yeah i went through it twice more... i turned the hold switch on and off twice, i counted really, really slowly and kept my fingers still...

Then something has most likely failed.

Hello,

I've the same problem, with a 1Go Nano. Yesterday, I plugged it in my PC, Apple logo appeared and... No life no more. Tried a couple of resets, no way.

But this morning, I try again to boot and because lights were low, I could see a small "flash" 5 to 6 seconds after the Menu+Select combo. So it looks like my nano try to power up but there's a power shortage.

Now, how can I charge it, only having the USB cable? When I plug this cable, nothing appears under Windows (my wife's PC) and unfortunately I don't check USB state under my PC (linux).

Any advice? Thanks in advance,

If you just plug in the USB cable, it charges, nothing has to happen in windows.

Hi,

If you just plug in the USB cable, it charges, nothing has to happen in windows.

Thanks for your reply but has something had to happen on the Nano itself? Because absolutely nothing blinks when I connect the USB cable...  :(

Well, looks like there's a serious problem and, of course, warranty voided last month.  >:(

No, if the Nano is experiencing the low-power problem that it has, nothing will happen on the Nano

Leave it plugged into your computer (which must be powered on), for about 2 hours, then turn the hold switch on and off (very important), and then try holding Menu+Select to make it reboot, while still plugged in.

I had a similar problem with a nano I got on ebay that would not switch off. It got itself into an extremely low power state that required about 3x8hr sessions of charging (initially absolutely no response followed by the 'very low battery' splash screen) before it sprung back to life. I was just about to bin it when it recovered  :P. Don't give up yet.

However, with a restore/firmware upgrade to fix the 'not-shutting-down' issue and a Rockbox install, it seems good ;D

I have had this happen, I have a 1st gen 2Gb Nano, Just hold down the Menu+Select button then release and do it again! Just a suggestion.

Hello everybody,

Some news from the front. This morning, my "dead" Nano was always dead, after a night of charge. BUT!
Being arrived at work, I thought : "Well, same player shoot again." and decided to connect it to the PC. I opened my case, took the thing off and... let it fall on the floor, a fall of about 40 cm! Damn, now things are getting worse and worse!
Well... NOT! I connected it and the white apple appeared!!!  :D For the first time, I saw the low battery message from the Apple firmware, the Nano told me not to disconnect and after that, I had the monochrome low battery icon for about 2 minutes. Now, it's happily charging (I hope).
Now, it's time for my two last questions and I promise I won't bother you anymore :
- Am I really lucky or do the shock "realign" the battery in its place ?
- I often get the monochrome low battery icon when disconnecting from the PC, being in Rockbox mode. Never when incidentally the Nano has booted in Apple firmware when I connected it (happens more often with recent update of the bootloader, the dual-core related one). Can it be a symptom of a wreak battery?

Have a nice day!

yes the shock might have re-alligned the loose connections on your Nano's battery terminal, check this site http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/ perhaps you could secure it better if you open it yourself.
