Title: Rockbox won't play single tracks
Post by: humberga on February 02, 2008, 09:53:57 PM
I have a sansa e260 and when i try to play a single track on rockbox (ie: if i have one song from Jimi Hendrix, I cant play it.) However, if more than one song is set to play (ie: an entire album by metallica) it will play that just fine. The problem shouldnt be DRM because none of the songs are from any of those sources. Also, all of the songs are in mp3 format.

Files-style or Databse-style?  Either way if you just "click" on a sound file it should play it immediately.  Maybe check the "Play selected file first" setting and make sure it's on...

It does this on both file- and database-selection. Also, the "play selected file first" setting was turned on already. When it does this it starts to load the song then it says in a box that lasts for about .1 seconds "Searching... 1 found (PREV to abort)" and then another box comes up for about .1 seconds after that and says "searching...0 found ()" then it goes back to the selection screen.

What does it say when you attempt to start playback from the File tree then ?

I wonder if this is similar to the behavior described here (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=15248.0).  I see this behavior with a device-disable build on my e280, but not with r16195 on my F40.  I have not yet been able to test this against current SVN.

When starting playback of an album the WPS will report the first track as track 2 -- maybe Rockbox is reading ID3 info from the wrong file?  If this is happening then I could see this leading to the behavior described here -- i.e. playback will only proceed if more than one file is in the directory.

edit:
humberga, what revision are you running?  I currently have r16179M-080127 on my e280.

edit2:
I found that while playback is happening Rockbox will properly begin playback of a single file from a directory.  However, if I stop playback first and then attempt to load the single file then playback fails.  I am now pretty confident that this behavior stems from the same source as the problems described in the topic to which I referred in the first chapter.

edit3:
pixelma notified me of a relevant Flyspray task in the other thread.  Here's a link: FS#8520 (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/8520)

It responds the same way in file mode and database mode. It probably is reading the tracks as one too many because i noticed it does the same thing for the last song in a list. The version is r16114-080119. Maybe i should just reinstall rockbox.

Edit:
Well, I tried updating with the newest version of rockbox but it still has the same problem.

hey,
i also have a sansa e260 and have the same exact problem. the only thing i discovered is that if i get a song playing from a list of multiple songs, then select a single song, it plays. this is very annoying!

Yeah, guitarhero, thats exactly how it happens so thats the only way i can actually play music.

Just want to let you know I also have the same problem on my E280R.  I updated to build r16290-080211 yesterday and that's when I noticed the issue.

Is this only affecting Sansas?  Or only Flash-based players?  Or only when dircache isn't used?  I've tried and tried but can't make it happen on my H300 nor Gigabeat.

I have not been able to reproduce this on my Gigabeat either.  I am checking again with my e280 using r16299 and am not seeing this behavior.  Can others who have posted here report whether or not they are still seeing this behavior?

I am not seeing the buffering/playlist problem reported in the other thread with this build either.  Will update to current SVN and report back.

*EDIT* I don't know why but it is now clearly exhibiting both problems.

Hello all,

Did some more testing.  I upgraded to build 16354-080219 and I'm running it on a Sansa E280r.  I am experiencing both the issue with a single track not playing and the following issue highlighted in another thread:

"When I select the first song of an album, it pulls it up properly, but the track is being listed as track 2.  It then goes properly to the next track, but lists it as track 3.  After the second track, it seems to self-correct itself, skipping over the real track 3 completely, and going to track 4, as well as displaying that it is track 4.
If I pull track 1 up and it's displaying it as track 2, I can hit the back button to restart the track, and it starts displaying it as track 1 properly at this point, and the problem goes away.  It's a simple work-around, but kind of a nuisance at the same time."

I think they are definately related, as in one example we skip right to track 2 even though it's the first track in the playlist, and then when a single track is played, I think it tries to skip to track 2 but there is no track 2 so it just gives up and doesn't play anything.

After even more testing, I realized that if I try to play a single track from the database in Artist or Album Artist it will not play.  But if I select it from Track, it finds it in the playlist (no. 243 it was) and it played fine.

Also, a coworker of mine also has a Sansa E280r, he is loaded with 16096-080117, and his works perfectly fine. Hope this all helps, as I want to keep using Rockbox.  Keep up the good work, and let me know if there is anything else I can test.

More testing...I downgraded to version r16137-080122 and all is now working well.  When I have time (don't know when that will be), I will slowly work my way back through more current builds to try and find where the issue was broke.  Don't hold your breath!

Sorry...spoke too soon...it worked once on the older build, then back to broke.

pholler, thanks for your interest in helping to get some information on this problem.  However, the rules on these forums require that you modify your post if no one else has posted.  Please don't multi-post.

I'm having a similar problem on my 30GB 5.5G iPod.

If I try playing a no-DRM iTunes-encoded AAC through the database menus, and it is the last song on a list, or the only song on the list it will flash the actual file name (a random iTunes string ie: SHDS.m4a) and go back to the menu. This is with repeat off, and no song already playing.

With repeat on, it acts as if the song has been successfully played through.
When there's already a track playing, everything seems to work fine.

I cannot see any error message, and the same file plays fine through the Files menu.

I'm using r16342-080218, default settings (with the exception of repeat being disabled)
If there are any files or data you'd like me to upload or provide, I'll do my best.

Im running r16410 now. After trying the new build it seems to work fine. I'll give it a few days and see if any issues come up. Hoping it should be fine though.
