The current artist badge is just a variation of the staff badges, and we would to keep the staff badges and the "recognition" badges separate. With this is mind, I'd like to launch a competition for all you artists out there to design the new artists badge!
It should have the same (or smaller) dimensions as the current badges, but other than that you have free reign - the only requirement is that it looks different to the staff badges.
For a reminder of what the various badges mean, please see here: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=23214.0
The winner of this competition will of course be eligible for an artist badge :)
Edit: It might be nice to have something that can be adapted to hypothetical future other badges whilst keeping the same feel.

OK, to get things going, here's my entry.
Now I don't know how the forum gods want to decide on this, but if they just pick the best available entry without the option of not changing at all, I'm sure you'll all feel motivated to improve on this one :)
-
A fine first effort! Personally, I would very much like to change the badge, so if any artists out there don't want all their posts accompanied by gevaerts' effort, then they should get creating... :)
-
Here's my first entry
-
Another entry from a non-artist ...

Another entry from a non-artist ...
I like this, but I'd scoot that to the left and use the rockbox Rb on the right :)
-
Rather then have separate styles for the artist badges, maybe just adding a bold text line below the username saying "Rockbox Artist" would make sense.
-
I'm not too fond of the text-free palette image. I'd personally go with something that said perhaps "Contributor: Artist" to parallel potential other contributor badges that may be proposed in the future. A style that is distinct from the "Staff" badges, but can also spawn a line of badges if others become needed in time.

Palette with text:
-
That doesn't really help establish a unified visual theme for other contributors though. Not that there necessarily needs to be one, just in my mind it'd be nice to have.
-
I disagree - the current badges all have a yellow background. Using a different background colour for contributor badges means they are clearly another category. Simply changing the icon and text for other types of contributor allows a degree of consistency.
-
It's the idea of "a different icon for each contributor" that seems to break consistency to me. If each one has a different icon, what's the consistent part about it?

Colour scheme and general layout?

Here's some creative stealing of yapper's work
Edit: updated
Edit: added a slightly different one
Edit^3: added another variation
Edit^4: How about different colours?
-
Some more. New post because of attachment rules :)
-
gevaerts adaptation no 9 of yapper's is my favourite so far :)
-
I find myself liking 5, 6, and 9 best (in that order).
-
A transparent "Rockbox" would give #9 on blue-paneled messages and #10 on white-paneled ones. Those two are kind of how I'm leaning currently. This would give a kind of compromise between those. (I'm assuming that transparency in PNGs is supported.)
-
Here's a preliminary of my idea. Feedback, please. :)
-
I don't get this competition. What is the exact need for artist badges to be completely different from the "usual" ones? A badge should indicate contributions (and a little word on what type of contribution). The developer badge does this as well as the artist badge.
-
Primarily
a) To clearly distinguish those whose answers are expected to (usually) be correct
b) To clearly distinguish those with forum powers
-
So forum posters are expected to RTFM but not RTFB? read the fine badge
;)

I thought that I'd have a go at it...

I like the donut-style one with the blue text (Artist-Logo5.png in the link below).
I put the individual images up here: http://www.pcredux.com/rockbox/

@ BlastTyrant
I like the one positioned at (2,-2), that is the one with the filed in circle and and red writing.
-
i like the right column but i have no preference on the colour

Is the contest over yet?
I made something too:
I somehow reused gevaerts' "artist" tag, so he'd need to accept this as well (I could redraw something if he does not want his artwork to be used).
Is there a list of all existing badges? I had a hard time finding a color that wasn't used allready. Of cource I can adjust it if you want.
some color variations to make it more different to the old badges:

Have fun and see this as a thanks for this great software!

I can't tell you much about where the badge thing is going, but you can consider all my proposals in this thread as free to use in whatever way you like.
