Title: [REALLY SOLVED] How to create a wps screencut for Theme uploading
Post by: steak on January 03, 2013, 09:21:56 AM
Dump all this and jump to Saint's reply !!

I found this method for WindowsXP user : probably not the most elegant but it works :

Go to Clip+ Themes page http://themes.rockbox.org/index.php?target=sansaclipplus
Click-right on one of the screen shots, save the image.png on your computer. Open it with paint, zoom in.

Open the simulator (if needed, get it here http://rasher.dk/rockbox/simulator/)
Make a screenshot (hit PrintScreen key)
Open paint
Paste
Zoom in to select the Clip screen as accurately as possible
Copy
Paste it in the first Paint window. Make sure it does not overlap (make it larger) the previous image
Save the new image (as .png file)
Done

When you upload, make sure you put the right file up as wps, you cannot change it afterwards. (Somehow I messed it up and my Theme comes up with the Menu instead of the Wps screen)

I made this as simple as I could so please don't ask me more explanations as I would only make things confusing  :-[

Alternative method sans futzing around:

Settings - System - Debug (keep out) - Screendump
(this setting is a toggle, selecting once will enable, selecting again will disable)

With screendump enabled, all one needs to do to trigger a screendump is to insert USB. This can be done from any screen. Disable screendump in order to mount the device and retrieve the images from the root of the device. You can, also, do this with the simulator by enabling screendump in the same fashion described above, and simulating USB insertion (the "u" key, iirc), the screendump(s) will be available in the root of the simdisk.

EDIT: Additionally, it is possible to edit the theme after uploading. Simply upload with the same criteria as you did initially (same theme name and email address - you will receive a confirmation email), and the theme will be replaced and give you the option of keeping the original screendumps or adding new ones.

GREAT ALL DONE !!

Alternative method sans futzing around:
Settings - System - Debug (keep out) - Screendump
.../...
Nice and clean. Much better than my "système D" which I am not proud of, especially considering what "D" stands for... don't ask by the way...

You can, also, do this with the simulator by enabling screendump in the same fashion described above, and simulating USB insertion (the "u" key, iirc), the screendump(s) will be available in the root of the simdisk.
That did not work. It seemed to but no files in the root.

Interesting though. That makes me wonder if you could you reveal more keys to simulate things that seem unaccessible on the Clip+ simulator (like volume or lock/unlock). I had a look in the wiki which redirected me to the keymaps... which I don't understand...
I can live without it (I actually survived until now) but you seem to be the right kind of Saint : one that grants wishes  ;D

EDIT: Additionally, it is possible to edit the theme after uploading.

Done it all, Thanks !!

You won't be able to simulate soft-lock this way, but have you noticed that you can simply click on the physical buttons on the simulated audio player? As for the screendump not functioning in the sim, this is pretty firmly in bug territory...it should work.

volume button is virtually absent (side of player not displayed). I do have a brain sometimes, doesn't help though

lock/unlock requires click on 2 buttons simultaneously. I have 10 fingers but a single mouse

Thanks for the hint and link to the simulator. That's definitely the coolest Rockbox related thing I dicovered this year! Ok, it's only 5 days old, but still...

Way to complicated :) Press F5 in the simulator to create a screenshot (in bmp format, you only need to convert to png afterwards)

Indeed, yes.

Over the course of a few posts the process has been reduced to its simplest form. I had absolutely no idea there was a "screendump" key.
It has brought to light the fact that the simulator keymap is largely undocumented, I should attempt to remedy this.
