Title: CF Card mod on old iRiver H320 troubles
Post by: khbaur330162 on March 19, 2018, 10:39:17 PM
Hey all, thanks for looking.

So I install a 128GB CF card with adapter into my iRiver, plug the iRiver into my computer, format the card to FAT32 and load all files including .rockbox folder over to card. On reboot I get "ATA error -80," but if I plug the unit into computer and then unplug, it boots into original firmware just fine. Any ideas what could be causing this?

From what I read, you may have the adapter cable attached upside down - whether that's at the player side or the "drive" side, I don't know.  I've just ordered one too, so I expect to face similar problems soon.

If you get it working, I'll be interested to learn what the impact is on battery life - my assumption is that not having to spin a hard drive every 3 minutes will lead to a significant increase, but I may be being too simplistic

The adapter should only be plugged in one way as there are pinholes on the right hand side that aren't used (they don't have PCB traces running to them on the adapter, if that makes sense). The stock HDD is the same way, the pin adapter off the H320 doesn't fill all the pinholes on the HDD. Also, The CF card can only be inserted into the adapter one way as there are grooves on either side and one groove is larger than the other. Plus, I don't know how I would have been able to format the CF card and copy files over to it if it were installed incorrectly.

This is the second unit I've modded, the first had a 64GB KingSpec 1.8-inch SSD (which gave no problems during modification). I do remember getting better battery life after upgrading, I think it ran about 18-20 hours with a new battery.

Thanks for the battery update.

Hope you get it sorted

Tried the modified H300 bootloader available in Rockbox CFModGuide to no avail (get ATA error: -81 this time and it says there's no partition). Can't find any other bootloaders made for larger sized drives. Returning the CF card and gonna try a different brand in case it's the card. Also bought a new CF to 1.8" 50 pin IDE adapter in case it's that. Any other ideas still greatly welcome.

So I tried a different CF card and I tried a different CF to 50 pin IDE adapter and still no go on both; ATA Error -81. Not sure why this is giving me such difficulty. The only thing I can think of is to try yet another CF card. Any and all advice greatly appreciated.
