Title: Text player with one word at the time
Post by: johnboy on April 01, 2010, 06:25:09 AM
I once saw in a museum a suggestion of different types of reading. One of those was that only one word would be shown each time and it would spin through the words at a constant rate and they claim that it's a faster way of reading because the eyes don't have to move.
I thought of implementing it myself but I don't see that I'm getting to do it so I'm hoping someone else will pick up that glove.

The main benefit I see in this is that it allows the use of a big font and that it's a hand free operation (compared to the scrolling of the current text viewer).

One thing that I read in other places about it that it would be nice to put an extra delay after words with punctuation marks as they are meant to have a pause with them.

Happy smurf day

Do you know about any proof of concept? For me it seems just as an unfinished idea. How would you control the rate for showing the words to not disturb the rhythm of the reader? A reader also sometimes needs to stop for a while, return back etc.

IMHO for testing of such ideas it is much better to use a PC (which covers the whole development cycle) instead of such a special device like audio player is.

I looked it up, and the method is called "Rapid serial visual presentation". In wikipedia it tells about it and some sites that show implementation of it.

I would think that going back and forward will be with the scrolling (or the equivelant) and it will jump from sentence to sentence. The speed will be controlled by the forward and backwards, and the pause will pause.
That at least what I thought when I had the sansa in mind.

Something like this FS#8288 (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/8288)?
